View Full Version : PANTENE Pro-V is not a good hair product!

Just-A-Boy

In my personal experiences with hair care products I learned a lot of my mistakes, and now even my best friend who is professional hair colorist has taught me, what hair products to use, and I've seen improvements. Moreover, I want to share my opinions with you people.

First off, PANTENE Pro-V is advertised everywhere. On TV's and Magazines. However, PANTENE Pro-V is not a good hair product WHY? Because it only contains Pathenol (Vitamin B5) and that is about it.

Other over-counter shampoos and conditiners we buy at the drug stores, are no different from Pantene Pro-V, they all contain Panthenol, and maybe even two herbal extracts.

My hair always felt dry, and damaged… so I turned to my best friend, and she recommended salon brand shampoos and conditioners. Therefore, I tried all Organic Shampoo that contained NO Alcohol, and my hair improved so much after using it. It was not dry any longer, and I finally had control.

I also learned to buy conditioners that contained Amino Acids, and/or Glucose and good potent herbal extracts. YOUR HAIR NEEDS PROTEIN! I know Salon brand products are expensive, but I personally think they are worth the price.

I hope this article was helpful… and any one wants to share their experiences on Professional Hair Care products, will be gratefully appreciated.

My mom's hair stylist and mine both say it's a bad product. Yes, it makes your hair nice and pretty, I loved it. But what it really does is break your hair down, so when you stop using it, your hair is really damaged.

I agree that Pantene Pro-V is an awful product!!! I used to use it and it took me two years to find out it was killing my hair. My hair went from shiny, silky, soft to lifeless, rough-feeling, and tangled! Plus it was falling out sooo much!!! All that stopped when I switched to products by Kerastase! So, now I don't ever use Pantene! But, I can't afford Kerastase in general...so I try other brands that are cheaper. For a few months I've been happy enough using Down Under Naturals. I like the Papaya scented for damaged hair. Yes, now I have to get the kind for damaged hair all because Pantene damaged my hair!!! What's interesting though is how much Pantene is advertised and how many people say they love it! I don't get it....At least I'm not crazy, since there are many others who agree that it sucks!!! :D

I used to use Pantene. It dried my hair more even though I used their moisturizing line. I recommend Infusium. Their shampoo and conditioner made my hair softer. Although the ends are still kind of dry due to coloring. But I think the only way for me to get rid of that is to cut it. But overall I did see a difference in my hair after I used Infusium.

Pantene is actually one of my favorite store bought shampoos and conditioners. I have naturally curly hair that get dyed every so often and Pantene keeps it soft and shiny.

The only thing I have a problem with is itchy scalp - now I don't have dandruff at all - just my scalp gets itchy if I don't wash my hair everyday - which really isn't good for your hair. I recently tried a different shampoo - Joico - and thought that my scalp itchiness might go away - but it didn't - and to tell you the truth I liked the way my hair felt with the Pantene Curly more than Joico!!

One of my salon faves is Redken with Avocado oil. Its a nice one.

I don't know which ones aren't good for your hair or not. I use what works bet for ME - so I can't say whether its good for someone else or not.

Of course a salon or stylists are not going to push/promote drugstore products either. LOL Thats understandable. I find some salon shampoos/conditioners suck just as I find some drugstore brands suck. Funny though cause many salon brands are now sold in drugstores. :)

Any reputable hairdresser would tell you that Pantene is a cr*p product to put on your hair. It might make your hair look good short term, but long term it's disastrous for your hair.

Pantene Pro-V did so much damage to my hair and scalp!! It made my hair and scalp VERY dry. It may make your hair look good, but like the previous poster stated It disastrous. It also made my hair fall out.

My hairdresser was never addamently aggainst Pantene, but he was definitely not a fan. My sister and I both got dandruff from the line. I loved the way my hair looked when I used the volumizing conditioner, but the itchy scalp and dandruff were not worth it.

Ive always believed that Pantene Pro- v over time, causes build up on your hair , because of all the 'additives' or whatever they put in it.

i stopped using it after a bit  . My hair feels damaged now, or thoroughly 'oxidised' . Im yet to find a good shampoo which is natural, and repiras it, organic shampoo sounds like a good choice. Is there any shampoo nowadays that doesnt have anything 'added' to it? They never used to

Saw a 'White Truffle' Luxury shampoo on the net the other week costing nearly £100.00!!!

I agree.... if you do an archives search on this board, you'll find the topic "I hate Pantene!!" where I griped about it wrecking my hair. I have naturally curly hair and used the moisturizing line. Disasterous. You're absolutely right about it being the build up. Pantene is full of stuff to coat your hair to make it LOOK healthy and shiny. This build up eventually blocks all necessary moisture from penetrating the hair shaft. It's a terrible product.

For dry hair I recommend Redken All Soft. I love that line. I also love Ouidad's line for curly hair. Pricey, but very worth it.

I disagree. I have used Pantene in the past and it worked great on my hair. I used it for years. I am currently using Dove which I like but I see no difference in my hair and I color my hair. I think that it is just a matter of what you like.

I have heard that it is the worst for build up on hair. I have never used it or bought it as i don't believe the price is worth it. I don't know how much it costs over in the States, but here in Australia i consider it to be expensive for just some old shampoo you can purchase at the supermarket.

I buy Schwarzkopf products and also try to give regular shampoos a miss and use natural shampoos which contain no detergents in them such as sodium laural/laureth sulphates.

Personally I use pantene classic care shampoo and classic care condition and I am a man. I have used it for about a year and a half. Nothing has destroyed it to my knowledge. I have I guess thick hair for how short it is and it has curls on the bangs which some women I know think it's cute. I used to have large thick hair which is growing quite well, quick, and easy. Trust me I am the kind of guy that some times takes 2 hours or more to spike his whole head in the perfect sharp looking liberty spikes and other crazy spikey hairdo's. Having a whole head of pomade in your hair and getting it out if a pain in the arse, not to mention the pulling it takes even making the spikes. I feel that this product works perfectly well.

Btw, my hair is shiny and a lightish/kind of dark brown with a small orange tint in some places, very soft, and people love to rub it during the normal hair mode...

I guess we are all different.

I am so happy to find that other people have had bad experiences with Pantene products!! I have been using Pantene shampoo/conditioner for over 10 years. Always had the itchy scalp, but no dandruff and thought I simply washed my hair too much. When they came out with the new lines I started using the smooth and sleek because my hair was so full and frizzy. I LOVED it!!! But I have been using it for about 2 years now every time I wash my hair and I have recently noticed my hair is thinning!!!! I thought I was starting to go bald at the age of 26 so I decided to do some research. Reading all your posts have convinced me to immediately stop using Pantene products. Those of you who LOVE Pantene, just keep all these words of wisdom in mind when you start having problems....But hopefully you will start looking for alternatives now before it's too late. I should add that I started looking for alternatives when I found the Smooth and Sleek was too heavy for my hair. Just as someone else had mentioned, when I stopped using it, my hair became brittle and in the worst condition ever. I hardly ever use heat on my hair and I am very gently with my hair. I get regular cuts and now my hair is full of split ends now that I stopped using the Pantene regularly. Really, you need to stop before your hair is too damaged....

I would love recommendations on shampoos/conditioners that any of you may have found to repair the damage and get my now thin hair back to it's full and healthy condition..... I noticed someone mentioned Kerastase??

Hey its me... who originally started this post.

Well I hate PANTENE products but I love their commercial, they make it Louis Vuitton style.

If you want to try good hair products, I would recommend you look into salon brand called MODERN ORGANIC PRODUCTS (MOP).

THEY ARE INCREDIBLE!

I love their C-System Clean Shampoo that does not contain Sodium Laureth's. Its all organic product.

If you have hair product build up, try Paul Mitchell Shampoo 3... it contains Sodium Laureth but Paul Mitchell Shampoo 3 is a very strong hair build up remover.

Kerastase is a rip off and trys to be a luxury brand I would never use their products that contain same ingredients that are found in Pantene Pro-V.

I've been using Pantene pro-V and love the way my hair looks! BUT...
my hair has been falling out each time i shampoo and I couldnt figour it out.
This has been going on about as long as i've used this product.
But...My hair was full of shine & body, I never drempt it was Pantene!
I will STOP using it and see if a more expensive salon shampoo is kinder to my hair.

Ahhhhh, I've been using Pantene for a couple of years, but now I'm scared!!! And I agree with the other poster about hating Joico. Ugh, it's terrible for curly hair... I can't tell you how terrible my hair is with it.

I have naturally very curly/frizzy hair that has been damaged by chemical straightening (which I haven't had redone for over a year), and I use a lot of product to keep it all under control (leave in conditioner/mousse etc). Can anyone recommend a good shampoo/conditioner that will moisture, repair damage and do something for the frizzes?

Has anyone tried the new Pantene overnight treatment that comes in a packet? You're supposed to leave it in your hair while you sleep. I can't find it anywhere and don't know if it works or not.

Thermasilk is a okay product, there is no way, its heat activated. Its a advertisement gimmick.

Try... Back To Basics products... they are around 8 to 11 bucks. You will see a big difference.

Wow! I was using pantene and loving the soft way my hair felt but lately Ive had a serious problem with dry scalp and dandruf- also very itchy scalp. I thought it was because I have dry skin due to thyroid but now Im wondering if its the pantene shampoo and conditioner? Ive been using head and shoulders cause of the dry scalp and dandruff. WOW, i never knew this stuff.

Pantene also makes my hair fall out. My hair dresser said they use this product on horses tails because it is so harsh that it cleans really really dirty hair! Yikes! He recommends Infusium products.

Just-A-Boy
01-22-2005, 11:44 PM
Infusium is manufactered by P&G, the giant powerhouse who manufacters Pantene Pro-V.

Ok so what should you use then? What is good for your hair and you can buy it at a sore like target or from a salon?

Just-A-Boy
01-23-2005, 08:09 AM
Back to Basics are a good salon products that are sold only in Salons.

Try, Back to Basics products.

You could also try, MOP (Modern Organic Products) its usually little expensive around 14 bucks to 30 bucks... but everything is organic and provides very good quality.

Well everyone knows why their hair is falling out and stuff right? This was in a health article {removed} Almost every shampoo product has sodium lauryl sulfate . And what is sodium lauryl sulfate ? It is a chemical they use in roads! And people put that on their hair when they use shampoo
{removed} These chemicals are in many personal use products please read the labels, as always when in doubt throw it out. A little research will let you make your own safe products, then you will know what is in them.

SHOULD NEVER BE TOUCHED BY HUMANS! And people touch it and wash their hair with it. Shampoo companies need to be sued. It's in toothpaste also. companies now days are f-in sick!

I am so glad I found this post! I used to use Pantene Pro-V. My hair fell out like crazy in the shower. I thought there was something wrong with me. Then, for now particular reason, decided to stop using Pantene Pro-v and my hair stopped falling out. However, after I stopped, my hair became so damaged and dry. I've never had my hair feel like that my whole life. I went to my hairdresser and she had to cut off more than an inch to get rid of the damaged ends. I've switched to some good salon products and will never use grocery store brands again. I always thought it was just a bunch of hype about salon products. But I found out the hard way that some of the grocery store shampoos are very damaging to hair.

Thanks for the thread!! I was so relieved to hear that I wasn't the only one having a problem with Pantene. The stuff is major cr@p!!

The last time I checked, Pantene has ammonium lauryl and laureth sulfates, not sodium lauryl sulfate, but maybe they have changed the formula since then. I noticed they've added ammonium sulfates to Thermasilk, which I used to trust as a gentle shampoo. I've heard that ammonium sulfates are even worse than sodium lauryl, but I have also heard just the opposite. I try to avoid both, though I use Head and Shoulders (has ammonium sulfates) occasionally with no problems. I like Back to Basics Marine shampoo - it does contain sodium laureth sulfate, but that is supposed to be one of the "ok" sulfates. That and TEA-Lauryl sulfate.

I will be very glad to help you. MOP products are organic and some of their collection use (Sodium Laureth Sulfate but not Sodium Lauryl Sulfate). They have one VERY ORGANIC product called. MOP C-System Clean Shampoo and it does not contain any Sulfates (NO SLS of any kind).

I use MOP C-System Clean Shampoo. I love the matter of fact that it has no fragrance and its light and infused with Vitamin A, C, and E and organic herbal extracts.

MOP C-System Clean Shampoo is hard to find and usually priced up. It could range from 14.99 to 24.99 at some salons for 10oz. Look for MOP products at luxury hair salons, thats where I usually was able to find them.

Any questions? I will be glad to answer more.

In my opinion... I think Pantene and Pantene Expression collection are just too toxic for your hair. I think my many people would agree with me by their personal experience with Pantene Pro-V.

I have been freaking out because I have been noticing my hair is REALLY thinning-which is not okay. I'm a 25 year old girl.
I have been a regular PantenePro-V user for years!
Is there any hope for re-growth or improvement after discontinuing use?
Besides changing shampoos, is there anything else that will help (vitamins, supplements, etc)?

When I stopped using Pantene my hair started growing back in without a few weeks. My hairdresser also says no to Pantene products. He does recommend Infusium which I have been using and really like. The condition is too heavy for my fine hair though so I mix just a little of it in water in a spray bottle and just spritz a little on my hair in the shower then rinse. Works great.

I agree and comming from a haridressing background- pantene is silicon based- all it is doing is giving your hair a shinny finish but not going deep down into the hairs cuticle. When colouring hair in the salon most clients couldnt have there hair coloured because of using Pantene. The coat that is put on the hair of silcon sure does build up!!

A lady i work with says that each time she goes to her hair dresser she has to tell them whether or not she is a pantene user, as they have to treat hair differently for pantene users due to what pantene does to it. I've also come across a number of people who said their hair began falling out in clumps after prolonged use.

I used it some years back for a short time, but didn't find it all that special and i think it's over priced for what you are getting.

I agree, I was left with a build up on my hair that left it dull and lifeless!

I know it sounds mad but I used lemon washing up liquid (once) on my hair! it removed all the build up and left my hair super soft and shiny, the best it has looked it years! trust me it really really works!

I tried dove once, and it got in my eyes, BEWARE, it was like ACID, not the usual stinging you get when shampoo gets in your eyes!, they give the impression of being a gentle shampoo, I am just so glad I didn't use it on my young son!

On a regular basis I now use frutose sleek and shine!

[Removed] You know the Pantene commercial where the girl is swinging around her "oh so shiny" hair.
She has it on good authority that they actually used an Aveda product for that commercial. Aveda uses all natural products, and is good for the planet. I swear by their Sap Moss for a moisturizing shampoo that doesn't make your hair limp. Just thought i'd add to the list of great products being recommended on here.
