I saw somewhere on the net that Guaifenesin helps some people with FMS. Are you currently taking this? Did you ever take it for FMS? What health benefits did it provide.
I'm new at this. Just diagnosed in Dec 2003.

Thanks

Hi. My pain doc prescribed me some, but I couldn't take it long enuf to notice any effects, cuz.. when I went to refill it, my pharmacist told me it wasn't being produced anymore do to the fact that it is now available OTC. Only thing is that you have to buy so much of the stuff to get a high dosage in order to use it to treat the symptoms of Fibro. My doc said that you need like 600 or more mg of this stuff. I personally didn't notice any difference. I know you can buy it online. Just do a search on it. There are some that swear by it, and I know there are what are called "blockers" that interfere with the guai effects, the list is hideously long, too much for my poor mind to comprehend, therefore I don't take it anymore. But it works for some. Try it if you can, but make sure your doc knows you are taking it.
Stay flare free!

Hi,

I started on the guaifenesin protocol, but as I read more about it realized it was near impossible for me to do it correctly. There are a lot of blockers that interfere with the guai so that means I would have to stop using most of my herbal supplements like grapefruit seed extract (for sinuses), echinachea and of course you can never consume anything with mint or aloe. That is just a partial listing, there are so many things that block it that there is barely a soap, shampoo, lotion or toothpaste that one can use. Guai has to be taken for the rest of one's life for the protocol to work. I took it for awhile and noticed only that it gave me continuous post nasal drip and body odor. Guai is available OTC in 600mg time released tablets under the name of Mucinex. It is not cheap! [search instructions removed] You also have to follow a hypoglycemic diet to get it to work.

That said I'd like to share that my pharmacist gave me a month's supply of something called Fibro-X he wants feedback on before he puts it on the shelf. He said "in the old days" fibro was treated with malic acid. Fibro-X has malic acid among a host of other things, some of which I wonder about like shark cartilage. Anyway I've been curious about the malic acid thing ever since. Then I spotted a small booklet at the health food store entitled "Malic Acid and Magnesium for FMS". Anyway it goes into great detail about why those supplements & others are used to treat fibro and why it works. Its a very interesting read. It is too early to give my opinion on the Fibro-X stuff, but I am also starting to take the other things listed in the book such as Boswellin, B6 and 5-HTP. The book cost under $4.00 so you might want to check it out. Meanwhile I noticed in newspaper there is a local fibro support group in my town so I am hoping to attend their meeting on Friday and hopefully will meet someone who can help me with this pain.

Best wishes to all!
Angela
