I was wondering if anyone with Fibro has had breast reduction and what your experience was. Of the few people I know w/out Fibro who had it, 2 said the pain wasn't very bad and another said it was extremely painful. Obviously any time you are cut on for surgery you are going to wake up in pain, but I would like to hear how those with Fibro survived breast reduction as I am considering this surgery.

do you have CFS as well? i know a lot of people with CFS say dont do general anesthetics as they make many ppl a lot worse, and can cause a relapse. So beware, and as fibro is quite similar it probably has the same effect!

Hi Pixiepoodle,
I went thru the surgery about 6 years ago. I didn't know I had FMS, and was Dx'd within 6 mo. of surgery. Kind of a chicken and egg sort of thing, but I'm sure I already had the FMS.
From a purely pain point of view, it was THE most painful surgery I've ever had. BUT, I had a butcher dr. who cut me from armpit-to-armpit!!!! Not the sweet little "T" cut that I learned AFTERWARDS is what MOST dr.s do. I have an aprox. 1" space between my breasts that SHE didn't cut. Everything else was mincemeat. Also turned out I was allergic to the (lactose based) sutures used, so my breasts spit little bits (actually, sometimes BIG bits) of sutures out for about 2 years! They were supposed to dissolve, but they didn't.
Now that I've told you the worst part, the GOOD part is pretty good, too. My neck/shoulder pain has decreased by at least 50%. I can FINALLY go braless without scraping the ground! (slight exageration). I've always been a tiny person, so giganta-boob  looked VERY out of proportion. Not so now. In fact I can wear all the tank tops I dreamed of in high school! :D I can actually buy one-piece clothing (dresses, etc), without the top being too snug, and the bottom being to big! :D :D
One weirdness to work thru was posture. After reduction, it took about a year to balance out so that my hips weren't jutting out to the front and my upper torso slanting back. This did cause some backaches and discomfort until my body rediscovered it's own upright stance. This was something dr.s didn't warn about, but I felt it to be one of the bigger issues.
So, hope this helps. On the all and all, I LOVE my new perky boobs! Getting to this point was a bit rocky, but, excluding the barbaric form of procedure, I would do it again.
cheers,
Hi - I had reduction surgery in August 2003 and it was the best thing I have ever, ever done for myself. I also have fibromyalgia, and I truly didn't notice any difference in the overall pain level. The surgical incisions hurt a bit of course, but I took it easy after the surgery, and there really was no difference in pain.
And the surgery itself was truly the best thing I've ever done. To go from huge pendulous breasts to cute perky ones is really fun! Good luck!

Just curious if anyone had breast augmentation and had problems with FM acting up more or recovery issues? Thanks, Jan
