View Full Version : Blood Glucose Level Question

Hi. I'm 26 weeks pregnant. Today I went for my 1 hour glucose screening. About 45-60 minutes (not sure) before, I ate 2 pieces of wheat toast with rasberry jam (a bit heavy on the jam). When they took my starting glucose level it was 190. They did not give me the 1 hr test because my level was 190. Instead they said I had GD, but they're running the 3 hour test in two weeks.

My question is this......I see some sites that say you should eat no more than 1 to 2 hours before the test. How abnormal is it to have a 190 glucose after eating carbs less than 2 hours ago and possibly less than an hour ago?

For a non-diabetic person, the blood glucose, even after a high-carb meal, should not go up to more than about 150. However, I'm not sure what criteria they use to diagnose GD.

The cut off for GD after the 1 hour test is 140. When your blood sugar comes back high for the 1 hour, the 3 hour is recommended. The cut off is the same for both tests. This score is regardless of if you have eaten prior to the test. Most GD's are diet controlled or they take oral agents.

Your body is never has stressed nor your hormones sporadic as when you are pregnant. Both things together can lead to GD. Thankfully, it usually goes away as soon as the baby is born. Good luck

Actually i'm gestational diabetic and there is no "oral" insulin you can take. If you need insulin you'll need both. The fast acting and the slow acting mixed together in a syringe. By the end of my last pregnancy i was up to 4 injections a day. Your first one tested pretty high but i would wait to see what your three hour is going to tell u. You need atleast 2 out of range to be diagnosed.

Some GD's are prescribed insulin therapy but others are prescribed oral agents. An oral agent is not insulin. I have known GD's on Glucophage and such.

Just wanted to point out that they were not the same thing. Good luck to you
