Hi Everyone! Well I did it and I still around to tell you about it. I was soooo nervous leading up to the actual surgery. They took me back (after I paid my deductibl first), Gave me Benedryl and something to help me not throw up afterwards. I took a Prevacid before I left. This all helps you not have any upset stomach from the anesthesia. I changed to a gown, they took my vitals and then wraped me up in a blanket that was heated up. There was an hour to go until the scheduled time. Well they wanted me now. That got the heart rate going even faster. I got wheeled into a room and met the anasthesioligist and my doctor. The nurse did my i.v. Once I they all said their hellos they injected me with some awsome stuff. I was flying. It was wonderful. I was wheeled into the operating room slid over to the table, they put that plastic thing over my mouth and nose and said take deep breaths. I only remember counting to 4.

I woke up in the recovery area, the nurse gave me my liquid Loritab, ice water and an ice pop. Then they brought me another warmed blanket. I got dressed and left at 11.

I got home laid on my chair and slept. 1:30 my husband gave me my liquid demerol. It did not get much relief from it. Cold water hurt to drink only room temperature. I had to do this every 20 minutes. I had to take in water or an ice pop. Doctor told me to eat as soon as possible. Anything I wanted. He said I could not hurt the wound by eating and swallowing. I told him I was going to have chips and salsa for dinner. My nerves were getting to me.

My husband gave me my 5:30 dose of demerol. By 7:00 I couldn't stand it anymore. The doctor said I was allowed to take Tylenol with the demerol. That was the only other meds I could take. So I ate an ice pop, drank ice water and swallowed two Tylenol. I feel GREAT! The pain in my throat is only around my uvula. So of course when you swallow it gets touched by the tongue and it is sore. I am able to talk now. Earlier in the day I just pointed. I realy do feel like I could go shopping. I am not weak or dizzy. I truly really feel GREAT!

Tomorrow I might try eating some scrambled eggs for breakfast. I want to see how it goes through the night and waking up the first morning afterward.

I will post daily for all you new tonsillectomy candidates. I know people like, Shayna, Alleycat, Brandon and MissLady really helped me out. I knew what to expect even though everyone's experience of pain was different. So good luck to you who are scheduled to have surgery soon and I hope I can help other decide whether this is something they should do. I am just so excited that I don't have to pick that white crap out of my tonsills anymore. No more bad taste in my mouth either.

Thank you again to everyone who helped me stay informed and reassured that it was worth it.

Keep us posted on your recovery....it's great to hear from other people what it is like to go through this. I am considering going to an ENT to see about my tonsils, I just don't know if my insurance would cover it. I have great insurance, but they might see this as an "elective" surgery since I don't get a lot of strep throat or infections. I just hate living with the tonsil stones!

:) My doctor said that my tonsils were large and I did just get over strep. THis time I had blisters on my tonsills. I didn't go to the doctor everytime I had a sore throat. I just told him that I was tired of them being inflamed and the stones. He sent in the approval and now they are out. It is worth it. It's not the most pleasant thing to go through but knowing I am not picking stones anymore is a great feeling.

Everyone reacts to pain differently. I just take it one day at a time knowing how much better I feel. My sinuses are not bothering me. It's amazing I did not wake up with a stuffy right nostril this morning. Good Luck to you. Just tell the ENT you have lived with this long enough and that by picking at the tonsills you end up aggravating the are more. Oh and tell him/her that they bleed when you pick.

It's so good to hear that you had your surgery. Sounds like so far your doing pretty well. Do you have a high tolerance for pain? Keep me posted I like to see step by step how others deal with their recovery.

Hey Kailiesmommie :)

I know when I had my surgery my ENT told me there are certian things insurance looks for before they will cover the surgery costs, but that shouldn't discourage you from checking with your doctor because beleive me life without tonsils is so much better. ( I just started getting tonsil stones when I had mine taken out but it was because mine were always inflamed and I had sleep apnea and chronic infection thats why mine were removed.)

 Ok, I have the horrible tonsil stones and sleep apnea... I think! I don't know anymore! I'm just worn out with all of this crap! I need some help!! PLEASE!!

I can't sleep! I did some research on sleep apnea and I think I fit the description pretty well. My husband thinks so too.

I just recently discovered slightly swollen tonsils and these hard white bumps. I'm actually able to stick my finger down my throat and pick them off of my tonsils. I know... it's totally disgusting!!!!! After I pick it off it leaves a big hole where it was. My tonsils look as though someone took a knife and slit little holes on my tonsils. I can see lots of them when I flash a light down my throat. It's CRAZY!!

My throat hurts when I talk a lot, when I eat and when I drink. I can also feel those white things with my tounge and I can see them too.
I've been to so many forums and read about so many people that have gone to this doctor and that doctor and tried this mouthwash and tried that....etc....etc....etc
I don't know about you guys, but we are not rich and doctors are not cheep! I have an appt to see an ENT this Thursday. I'm really not in the mood for the doctor to give me the run around... so should I insist on having my tonsils removed? Is it worth it? I'm desperate!! I will do the surgery!
Please help me out someone!!
Thanks in advance!!

Just wanted to post my experiance with a tonsillectomy at the age of 33,
I have read all of the horrible stories here and I would be scared to death if I was considering this surgery after reading this board. My experiance was wonderful. :) This was 15 years ago: I stayed in the hospital over night. Was never given anything for pain. Never got the pain medicine perscription filled. Dont remember what was for breakfast, but do remember eating macaroni and cheese for dinner the day after the surgery. I ate soft items for the next several day, and avoided diary items. I continued with my daily routine at once, at the time I had two children who were 10 and 11, one with mental retardation. I was off work 1 week . Had surgery on a Monday, and returned the next Monday. I remeber my throat being very dry if I talked to much at work. I would recomend to anyone if you are having problem go ahead and have it done. I feel really, really bad for these people having a terrible time.:(
