I was diagnosed with Type 2 in August 03. I'm still learning about what food makes my levels go up or down. I currently am not taking medication - so far so good (I think). I just took my 2 hour post meal reading and was 146. I decided to take it on a finger on my other hand. That reading was 155 - retook it where I did the first time and it was 157. Can BS flucuate that quickly and can they be different when taking the test on a finger on the right or left hand? I'm getting over a cold - that may account for it - because I have learned BS can go up when a person is sick. I see my endo in April for my yearly exam for past thyroid cancer. I have no thyroid gland and take Synthyroid. My diabetes has been monitored so far by my internist. Does anyone know if Thyroid medication can affect BS levels?

Hi Becky,
As far as I know, that's normal to get readings that fluctuate like that (as long as the discrepancy isn't too big). The meters aren't exact--the readings you get are close approximations. As far as the Synthroid, I take it too and I don't notice it affecting my blood sugars. As you already said, maybe it's the cold that you're getting over that's affecting your blood sugars. Feel better soon.
Sharon :)

Becky,
Sharon's absolutely right...the readings will fluctuate to a certain extent. The meters are only guaranteed accurate to within 20% (although they're often more accurate than that), the readings can change finger-to-finger and even minute-to-minute. And that's an excellent reading for two hours after a meal.
Sounds like you're doing pretty well.

Thank you both for the response. It helps to be able to talk to others with the same problems and not feel the questions are silly. That was good information for me to have. Thank you again for taking the time to answer my post. Good health to all of us. Becky
