Two weeks ago I decided my official quit date will be February 17th. In the meantime I managed to cut my two pack a day habit down to 7-8 cigarettes a day and have maintained that for about a week. I also changed my routine around a bit to try to eliminate or avoid those little triggers that give me the urge to smoke. So far, so good. But as my quit date draws nearer, I am getting nervous about it. I don't want to fail at this again. Can anyone here offer me any advice?

There are no failures. Sometimes we have limited success. Don't worry about long term. Take it one day at a time (gee, I've heard that someplace before). The only way you can truly fail is if you don't try.

Hello Greenaroo and welcome to the board! You will find a very supportive group of people here. We may be few, but we are all very supportive of each other. I came here a few days before I quit, 4.5 months ago. I had a 2 day relapse a few weeks ago, and everyone helped me get back on track.

Sounds as if you are doing all the right things you need to do by getting prepared. It does help to make changes in our routine sometimes.

This board is great for coming here to vent, talk about what we go through the first few months, our diets/exercise/weight gain prevention, info about nicotene replacement therapy, side effects, etc. Or just getting the support we need and those all important high 5's and pats on the back that we all need from time to time!

How much do you smoke, how long, and how many times have you quit before? I have quit at least 10 times before. Hopefully, this is my FINAL QUIT!!!!!! Do you plan to use any aids such as NRT or hypnosis, Zyban, etc? Tell us more about yourself Greenie!!

Welcome again, glad you're here,
DEDA :blob_fire

Hi Greenaroo and no I don't to answer your question - you silly rabbit (carrot sticks). LOL (laughin out loud)

Awesome job on both parts - diet and the cutback. You know what you have to do - we know it's hard but it's time to say goodbye, aud weiderzehn, hasta la vista, ciao, adios, cheers, (can't remember the french one LOL), to those nasty cancer sticks. I know you want to smell good since you're lookin good.

There are a few ways to maintain your diet success - keep doing what you're doing and don't eat anything more. HAHAHHAHHA I know right - good one. LOL Increase your workout some or exercise an extra day.

But it was reported before that you would have to gain 100lbs. to have the same effect cancer sticks do on your heart. I highly doubt you'll gain 100lbs. - can always get lipo. ;)

There is no good reason to continue to smoke - none. Please don't let your weight be an issue. Expect to gain 15lbs. like I did and if you do things to combat that weight gain then you won't be upset because I'm sure it'll be less than 15lbs.

Remember - weight you can take off but cancer you can't and you don't know which one will do it to you. It's not worth the risk and you can beat this Greenaroo - you've done it before. Be done with it :)

Prayer works wonders as well - please read the threads posted from the beginning and work your way up - they'll really help you.

Best of success to you and we'll be here for ya :bouncing:

Laurie

I haven't gained a pound. In fact I've lost five (don't hate me because I'm beautiful, well because...I'm not). I think all the sitting around smoking I did actually lowered my metabolism! Anyway, I was always told not to eat in place of cigarette smoking. The guy who said it, said everytime you put something in your mouth, your subconscience will say, darn, I wish this was a cigarette! I took some awful herbal liquid or chewed on an Australian Chewing stick I got at the health food store. I think in some ways it's easier to do both, at least you have split focus and aren't obsessing on just one thing!!

Yeah Laurie smacks guilty upsidedahead for losing weight. SHAME ON U - what happened to being part of the team? LOL No - you're just sickenin. LOL

Too late for me to not replace that with that, etc... but I have gotten to the point where I think the whole oral thing has worn off for the most part. Now I just don't do anything - instead of eating - which is prob. what most normal people do. LOL

You'll have to ask me where I'm at on 4/22 - my bday - I'd like to lose the majority by then so we'll see. I just have to stick with the gym and eat a little better. :)

You are all so funny and upbeat! I'm glad I found this group.

I'm not going to use "weight" as an excuse to smoke and I'm trying not to substitute food for cigs. Ha!

...everytime you put something in your mouth, your subconscience will say, darn, I wish this was a cigarette! You know, I think there's a lot of truth in that. Today, I think I'll try drinking more water & cut back on the carrots. My fingers are turning orange anyways. :D

Gosh, yellow from smoking, orange from carrots, what's the difference? I've been quit four weeks now. Not a huge amount of time (although the first week seemed to last forever). I've got a lot of weight to lose, so five pounds is a drop in the bucket. But I REALLY didn't want to put on any more weight! Next trick is getting up off my lazy behind and getting to that gym I evidently paid $300 to visit 5 times a year!

Greenaroo--

I know all about the carrots too. I buy these little bags of baby carrots and eat them till they are coming outta my ears! My burps smell like carrots. But my hands/feet bottoms are still human skin color. Am I doing something wrong here?

I would stick with 10 or less per day for at least a few months. It will make going cold turkey much easier. Don't set dates. Get used to smoking less and then one day, wake up and throw your cigarettes out. Then never look back. This isn't crack cocaine. There is no reason you absolutely have to go cold turkey on Feb.17.

I've been quit four weeks now.

Four weeks? Wow! That's great! I'll be thrilled if I can get that far. $300 to visit a gym 5 times a year? That's a chunk of change!!

Smoked two cigs. this morning then went to my dentist's appt. to have my teeth cleaned. Seemed like a shame to smoke after that, so I haven't. It made for a heck of a long day.

And you will get that far Greenaroo. Soon you will see how much easier it will become. I quit 4.5 months ago, after 30 years of a pack a day. (sometimes 1 1/2 pk if I was stressed). Yes, sometimes I still have cravings, but they are fewer and far between anymore. The 1st week was the most difficult, but it gradually got easier after that. And it will for you too. You'll hear a lot of people on this board saying the same thing.

Good going on just the 2 cigs today girl, you're almost free, you'll be there real soon. I know about having teeth cleaned and then not wanting to smoke. I used to hate to smoke after getting them cleaned. Now I feel like my mouth is clean and fresh all the time. (and my lipstick stays put too!!) :D There's more positives than negatives about quitting smoking, believe me. Keep up the good job your doing. We're all rooting for you here!!! :blob_fire :bouncing:

Ah Neno - please educate us on how continuing to smoke for a few more months 10 or less per day will be easier cold turkey? Have you tried this? I would LOVE to hear this one. LOL Oh and please - the statistics on the control group as well. LOL

Well Nenofury, last year I smoked around 10 cigs a day for two months without setting a quit date. I thought the day would come when I just didn't want to smoke anymore. That day never came.

I've been up since 5 AM and haven't had a cigarette yet. Woohoo!! I'm feeling more than a little edgy, but at least I have lots of work to keep me busy. It's funny how fast I can get things done when I'm not smoking. :bouncing:

I'm going to try to make it through the day.

That's great Greenaroo - somehow someone must've deleted my recent messages off. I'm not worried since these boards are watched. :) It won't keep happening. LOL

So how's the rest of your day going Green? They say it takes 21 days to break a habit so hopefully your over the chemical part now - now you just have to keep yourself busy which you're doing so you're doing GREAT! :bouncing:

Keep us posted :)

I haven't seen many people that come to the boards that have said this worked for them. And it's never worked for me or any of my friends. Maybe it works for a some people, but I think it's a small percentage overall. I'll stick with believing in the tried in true method. :nono:
