Hello. I'm 24 years old girl.
After giving an oral sex to a man I was diagnosed with thrush. I had white patches on my tongue and a feeling like something is stucked deep in my mouth.
Doctor precribed me one capsule of "Diflucan", but it didn't help me to get rid of it. I was rinsing my mouth with a salt and soda water but it didn't help either.
I have a feeling my tongue is coated with something and the "ball" feeling deep in my mouth still is with me.
Later I thought maybe I was infected with HIV, but I tested after 14 weeks - negative. But this feeling on my tongue and mouth still persists.
Maybe someone had the same experience and can help me. Because I'm really depressed with it and don't know what to do and how to get rid of it.

My doc gave me Nystatin to take by mouth 3x per day and a special diet. Look up candida albicans and see if that helps.

Dear Cricket,
thank you for your reply.
What kind of diet did he give you apart from Nystatin?
And one more question - your thrush was a result of what desease? I mean I guess I'm not immune compromised, that's why it's so scary. And all doctors say thrush only occurs in people who are immune compromised or drug users or with a cancer.

I always heard that thrush was a yeast infection (babies are prone to thrush). Have you tried eating yogurt or cultured buttermilk? The buttermilk is what we used to give to babies with thrush to coat their mouth. You might try it along with the Diflucan.

I recommend doing a throat swab.

It could be a normal mouth infection, I have a similar mild coating on the back of my throat, it started after I had taken some antibiotics for long periods, I did a throat swab, I was then diagnosed with some mouth infection, I don't remember the name, but the doctor said gram negative-something, he also asked me if I had preformed oral sex on anyone before having it.

And try yogurt, it helps a lot :)

Goodluck!

Hi  I have this too.I have had this on and off for two years and it is miserable :( .My doc says it can be caused by over use of antibiotics, stress, poor diet, steroid drugs, too much sugar in your diet and some illnesess.Nystatin did nothing for me and Diflucan only helped temporarily.I rinse my mouth out with hydrogen peroxide diluted with water and that has helped me.Cut out sugar and you will also see a big differance.Try not to worry(I know its hard) because your not alone others out there are suffering along with you.Research candida albicans on the internet you will find tons of info.Hope this helps! ~Take care~ :)

avron, your normal mouth infection could be thrush, especially following antibiotic therapy. The antibiotics kill the good bacteria as well as the bad. The "good" bacteria helps keep yeast infections down, and when the antibiotics kill the good bacteria, then the yeast can grow. Yogurt contains lactobisilous (sp) which is a good bacteria, so it would help re-introduce it back into your system following antibiotics, to fight off the bad bacteria and yeast. At least, that's the way I understand it.

P.S. Try the cultured buttermilk too. It's cheap (in the dairy products, by the quart) It may taste terrible, but it may help. We used it for the babies for thrush, before the hype about yogurt. Take a drink and swish it around as long as you can before swallowing.

My doc calls the diet the Candida diet. This is basically what it amounts to: nothing with yeast in it (all breads and various other products, I have to really read labels), no sugar, no caffeine, nothing with vinegar in it, no citric acid, no MSG, and no dairy - except white american cheese (check ingredients). It is very difficult to stay on this diet. But I try. I do get off sometimes for a meal or so, but then I try to get right back on it. At first, I couldn't tell much difference and was really depressed about this diet because he told me I had to stay on it and take the Nystatin for at least a year! Other people I have talked to and heard about, says that it helps to stay on it all the time. Because when they stopped, everything (all the symptoms) came back. Wonderful. :( ANy way, now I can tell a difference if I get off or go overboard with my eating. One good side effect - I'm loosing weight - which I have a diffecult time doing! Hope this helps.

Oh yes. I almost forgot, I have found several reasons for this to have happened. One, I have taken antibiotics quite a bit (during my life), and some of the meds I am on for other things, cause 'dry mouth'. If your mouth stays dry too long, too often, it messes up the balance in your mouth and can let the yeast have free reign of your mouth! Do a search on the candida albicans. I did. And read quite a few sites, to figure this out. Check it out.:)

Hi.

I'm experiencing the same issue. The doctor said I have a mild case of thrush. It's simply a white coating over my tongue. It doesnt hurt or itch.

I'm scared to death right now because 6 weeks ago I had unprotected sex with a female and now after researching on thrush it seems a very common symptom of HIV. I'm so scared. I can't sleep, eat, and I have to wait another 5 days for my HIV test results.

CanI haven't taken any antibiotics, or have diabetes, etc.

Can thrush be caused by stress, anxiety, or a cut in the mouth?

I mean - I don't have the best diet either, but can thrush come from somewhere other then HIV? - Why has a normal healthy person like me have a mild case of thrush in the mouth?

:( :( :(

I'm REALLY scared right now.
Any comments would be great.

hello shal,

Thrush can be caused by antibiotics, bad diet, stress and other mouth infections, it does not always have to be HIV.
I've asked some HIV+ people online, none of them had thrush, they only had an 'extreme case of flu'.

Also, thrush can be transmitted through kissing, so if the girl you were with had thrush, then you could have gotten it that way, same thing with oral sex, if you had performed oral sex on her and she had thrush down there, then that could be it.

I've developed a mild white coating on the back of my tongue from taking doxycycline without knowing that I was allergic to it.
Don't worry, I am sure you'll be negative. :)

I see the posts are a little old in this group, but maybe this will be helpful to future visitors. I have hemochromatosis, a blood disorder caused by a defective gene I got from my parents. It cause my body to retain high levels of iron. My body will not shed iron naturally. It's also called iron overload. The only cure is regular blood letting until your iron level returns to normal and then continuing for the rest of your life to keep the level normal. This condition often causes type 2 diabetes, which I have now. I do ok at controlling it, but it does cause problems. For 18 years I had a sore in my mouth and no one could figure out what it was. One doctor even did a biopsy on it and didn't know what to think afterwards. Because I have diabetes my teeth sudden started going bad a year before I even knew I was diabetic. So when I got dentures nearly 2 years ago...this sore in my mouth got a lot worse and then other things started happening...like a really sore tongue and feeling like I had something stuck deep in my throat. It got to where I could hardly eat. So.....I kept looking on the Internet until it became clear to me that I had thrush or Candida. I went to a new doctor armed with all kinds of print outs from the net, (boy, they generally hate that) and talked him into giving me Dulfacan, (sorry, may not have spelled that right) and I took that for like 14 days and magic! Not only no more thrush, but also the 18 year old sore in my mouth went away. It was great...no pain, no more burning...food tasted great. I also learned that not only do HIV positive people become prone to thrush, but also DIABETICS.....so it all makes sense to me now. One last thing....the thrush came back in about a month due to the dentures and I found out if every night when I take those dang things out...if I would swish my mouth with vodka or any other kind of alcohol (it's stronger than Listerine and yes it burns like mad) it would keep the thrust from popping up again. And yes...I spit it out....so it's not a good excuse to have a little belt before bedtime. So....hope this helps....I sure thought I was going to die there for a while...and now it's great to know I have a problem....but it's not deadly. Good luck everyone! Joe

Just went back to my doc this week, and he said to stay on the diet and keep taking the Nystatin and come see him in a year, unless I needed him before then. He also told me on my last visit that the buttermilk doesn't help. I told him I had always heard that it did (and I actually LIKE buttermilk). I haven't told him, but I do drink some occasionally, anyway. I don't know if helps or not, but I like it and so I drink some along.

I'll have to admit though, that I do feel better, and everyone says I look a lot better. (Gee, I must have looked awful, and no one wanted to tell me) ;)

ANyway, don't give up, it does get frustrating sometimes, but it is worth it to keep trying! :)
