After being misdiagnosed w/ankylsoing spodylitis for 5 years, I was diagnosed w/fibromyalgia today. Needless to say I am not thrilled. My mom has it, and I've seen how uncomfortable she is. I already have epilepsy, biploar disorder, allergies, ashtma, and reflux, and obviously chronic pain.
My doc wants me to got for physical therpay, and if that doesn'e do it, maybe trigger point injections. Has anyone had positive expereinces w/either. My last experience w/physical therpay was awful (granted under the wrong diagnosis). I want to learn more about the trigger point injections. I left a msg for the doc because the PT he referred me to only works until 3pm, and I stay home w/ my premature baby (who cannot go to daycare), so I need someone more flexable. Yet, I don't want someone w/no experience w/fibro.
Any advice would be appreciated,
Angie

Hi:
I hope my 1st message didn't come off too negaitive for everyone. I have been in a lot of pain for a long time, and has been making me mody, I admit. I also hope the word "bipolar" in the message didn't scare anyone off.
I have come to this board looking for ideas in dealing with chronic pain. As I am already on a decent amount of meds, my rheumatologist is not willing to rx any at this time. I am supposed to have a PT eval, but not until the 28th. I amlooking for ideas to hold me over until then. does anyone use heating pads? Is any one kind better that the next? Are there other pain specialists that you have had better luck with than rhematlogists? And, again, (as a last resort), has anyone has trigger point injections?
I would really appreciate any advice. And sorry if I came off negative before,
Angie

hi angie-I take ALOT of ibuprophen to stave off pain-I usually take(depending on the day) a 800mg dose once or twice a day I also take nortripyline every night-50mg- which puts me to sleep and that has made a world of difference it is an antianxiety and also for pain management and I also take zoloft-but I think I was put on that because of depression-not really sure though-all I know is out of any regimen I've been on this one helps the most for me-I've tried the narcotic pain relievers(vicodin) and indocin-which did good also-but this combination seems to work really well for me but everyone is different. Ialso take quinine for the restless leg syndrome which was a big help too. hope this helps-good luck! The Slayer

Hi:
Meds are problematic because of of my other medical conditions: I am not supposed to take Ibuprofen or indocin due to severe reflux (was on both for years), and I can't have nortiptiline or zoloft due to movement disorder (I've been on both. It was bad news: they cause me to have severe involuntary muscle movements. I am lucky in that I do not have restless leg syndrome. Vicodine helps a little bit for pain, but my doc doesn't believe in rx narcotics. Thanks for your suggestions though. I apreciate them,
Angie

hey angie-my doctor doesn't believe in rx narcotics either so good thing I'm able to tolerate the zoloft and nortriptyline! not being able to take ibuprofen either must be so hard for you. can you take any non steroidals? when I was going to my chiropracter when I was pregnant he gave me an herbal formula to treat the muscle spasms and even just getting readjusted helped alot too-alot of people who don't have back problems can still benefit greatly from chiropractic care-oh he also used to put me on an electronical stimulation thing that would help too-anyway I really hope you are able to something about the pain! take care

I am not sure what you mean by non-steroidals? celebrex, vioxx are all out because of contraindications id that is what you mean. The same goes for indocin, bextra, everything over the counter except tylenol, which doesn't work. I am uneasy about using anything herbal especially becasue I have epilepsy. And, truthfully, and I cannot afford to, nor would I trust a chiropractor. I am sure they help some people, it's just not for me. I really do appreciate your post though. I have had something along the lines of that elctro stim thing though at physical therapy before, so I know what you mean. We'll see what happens when i finally get my eval at the end of the month for PT, I guess. I appreciate your input,
Angie

hi angie,
me again. just wanted to say i really feel for you having the bipolar and also fibro. my mom has fibro as well.
i am not to ever take ibuprofen, aspirin, or tylenol (sometimes tylenol is ok) because i take coumadin for clots in my lungs. so i don't know what i'd do without the vicodin.
my psychiatrist went over all pain medication available with my pharmacist, and vicodin is the *only* thing they could come up with considering my other med issues. i appear to have a low seizure threshold (i've had a grand mal and two simple partials, maybe a complex partial due to meds) so i can't take anything with a sz warning either. and, even if ultram didn't have a sz warning, i can't take it due to the coumadin. :(
i wish i could help. just wanted to let you know you're not alone in having trouble finding pain relief.

Thanks for the post. That's the thing, I guess my doc just isn't that invested in getting me out of pain. I don't know.
