Well, day two really sucked (actually starting overnight after day one). So much for 'no nausea' in the aftermath of surgery. It just kicked in late! I couldn't keep anything down. No water. No meds. The stuff that came up was gross and scary-- very green. No fresh blood though, so that was good. After 12 or so gut-wrenching hours, doc called in a prescription for anti-nausea suppository. I took one... and it was a miracle. Haven't thrown up since and feel way better (though a side-effect of the anti-nausea med is dry throat so i have to wake up every hour or so to keep drinking). I'm hoping day three cuts me a break. i need to shower and brush my teeth! That's my story so far...

Thats gotta bite!!! I only got sick once and it was day 9 I think the only reason I got sick though was because of the meds I was taking.

I got sick from the morphine drip and hurled for quite some time. but I knew if I could barf like that after having my tonsils out and I didn't start bleeding -- I was going to be okay. Still felt like insert expletive, but I had one less worry.

Ha! That's true. I kept waiting for the blood to gush during one of my hack-fests (there certainly wasn't much by way of food and water in my stomach!). Friday nite was by far the worst cause I couldn't tolerate the meds so I had both insane pain and nausea. Today (day 4?) has been much better. I've switched over to extra-stength tylenol by day and Tylenol PM at nite. Pain has been tolerable in hour or two stretches. I'm starting to get restless and even hungry! Now, if only I could swallow... my glands are very swollen. I feel like I've had strep, swollen glands and root canal all in one day. I'm getting too old for this stuff... :-)

I know I sound like a broken record, but drink drink drink lots of water. Chew on ice. Otherwise your throat's going to feel "sticky" and your ears are going to hurt (dehydration). I think I was good for about 2-3 hours and then would need pain killers. Was given some nasty liquid tylenol w/codeine -- orange flavor and burned going down, so I'd use a tepid water chaser.

Thanks.. plain shaved ice is definitely my new best friend. I too, have the orangey tylenol with codeine and chase it down with lukewarm water. I have a few hours of semi-peace in the early afternoons, but tend to feel a bit feverish by 5p and near death again by 8. The painkillers help take the edge off for a while but I'm amazed at how quickly the pain comes back.. especially at 2:30am, like clockwork. I'm glad to hear you had some similar experiences and survived to tell the tale! This has been the slowest, most painful, most boring 5 days of my life! The daily grind will be such a welcome relief!

I deffinetly agree shaved ice was all I could get down most of the time after my surgery. How is the nausea problem coming?

The nausea problem has subsided (knock on wood). I'm taking the tylenol/codeine in smaller doses but it's really the only thing that takes the edge off (at least for a little while). The doc asked me tonite if I wanted something stronger so I may take him up on it. I just don't want to be left w/o a painkiller option for those occassional excrutiating flareups. My seven-year-old nephew is having his tonsils out in April so at least when he's around, I'm forced to suck it up a bit more! Thank goodness it's easier on kids! I'm heading into day six and I'm really tired of the rollercoaster. do you remember what day you really felt a light at the end of the tunnel?

Probably about Day 9 or 10 I felt better. Still took it easy though and things tasted weird for about a month after surgery. Was still pretty tired and still had to sleep propped up for at least two weeks. I was probably fully functional, even though my throat was still scratchy by week 3. Went back to work after two weeks.

For me my worst days were day 7 and 8 so I didn't see any light until about day 10 or 11. But you can get thru this!!! I did and you can too! :) Beleive me at the end of this journey it will be worth all the pain you went thru!! (Did you have your adenoids out to or just your tonsils?)

I had my tonsils out late in life - age 27. My number one piece of advice to you is:

Don't eat the icecream they tell you you can eat!!

Ice cream and other milk/dairy products can produce phlem (mucus - sticky ickies at the back of your throat) that can be quite bothersome - especially if you feel the need to cough (OUCH!). Ice and popcicles are good choices. That's my two cents worth. :)

Just the tonils (as far as I know!). Adenoids don't appear to be 'involved' in my case. I have had a problem with swollen glands for years though so I'm waiting to see if the tonsillectomy has a positive effect on that. It's always somethin'....
