View Full Version : Fisol Fish Oil? What type of fish oil is best for triglycerides?

Hi,

I was taking Carlson's Fish Oil - 6 per day (3000 mg of EPA and DHA) but quit when my doc put me on Zetia cause I figured that the Zetia would do the trick. Well, it's been 6 months and just had my cholesterol. The Zetia is helping a little bit with my Total Cholesterol and LDL's. But my triglycerides are waaay high now.

TC Sept.03=252 Feb.04=239
HDL Sept.03=43 Feb.04=41 (that' not good)
LDL Sept.03=168 Feb.04=123 (yay!)
Trigs Sept.03=206 Feb.04=377 (YIKES!)

Ok, so my doc says to start taking fish oil again. I was thinking about trying the Fisol brand as it is enteric coated, and it's not supposed to give you the "repeating" that regular fish oil does. BUT, if you read about the enteric coated (Fisol brand) it says that you don't have to take as high as a doseage, as it is better absorbed by your body. Now that sounded "fishy" to me...so I asked my doctor. She said that it didn't make sense. Just because something is enteric coated and dissolved in your intestines rather in your stomach doesn't make it "more powerful" or better absorbed.

So...the Fisol tablets only have 150 EPA and 100 DHA (yet it SAYS that it has 500 mg of fish oil...weird)...so I'd have to take TWELVE Fisol tabs per day. But the doseage on the bottle (I read this online) says to take only 3 tabs per day.

Hmmmm...would it hurt to take 12 fisol per day? Has anyone ever used that brand of enteric coated fish oil pills? That is the only brand that I can find that says they are enteric coated.

Thanks!

take 500 to 1000 mg of niacin a day, it will work better than fish oil for your tryglcidrides, and zetia lowered the crap out of my ldl 59 points in about a month or more

Niacin is still a statin, albeit a natural one. Statins damage my muscles. :( That's why I had to switch to Zetia.

Thanks though! :)

Niacin is not a statin. It is a B vitamin. While it may contribute to liver damage, it is not a statin. Maybe you are thinking of Red Yeast Rice, which in fact is a statin, albeit a natural one.

Hmmm...you could be right, maybe I'm getting the two confused. :o

All I know is my doc told me that I would probably get muscle pain/damage from Niacin because I do get pain/damage from the statins. (zocor/lipitor, etc).

Thanks for catching my boo-boo! :)

If you are interested in fish oil I would look at the NOW brand. They seem to offer quality products at good prices. I use their super epa and two capsules contains 720 epa 420 dha. The bottle of 60 costs about $8. This is a fish oil concentrate which is supposed to be the second best type of fish oil. Pharmaceutical being the first. They also test for all the impurities and use cold water fish.
