I've had this problem for a little while now, when I get hungry..I get really, really sick. I get dizzy, nauseous, hot & sweaty, feel like i'm about 2 faint(and have) or throw up.
Someone on another board when I posted this mentioned she had had the same problem with her daughter, and the doctor had said 2 keep food in her stomach at all times. I asked my nurse about it today and she said steroids, in any form, could be harsh on the body. I told her how prednisone had made me very sick and she said I was just sensitive to medication in general ..but anyways..
Anyone else get sick from asthma meds? What do you do 4 it 2 prevent it..sometimes I don't have ready access to food or water, but that's what makes it go away..and it's comes on without warning, usually i'm seeing 5-6 hours after non eating anything..and not everytime.

Um..that could be a sugar problem too. I know I get that way if I don't eat every couple of hours. I'm on all kinds of asthma meds, but the dr had tested my sugar and it was low. Always carry a water bottle with you. I have one in my car and I literally take it with me everywhere. Also, keep a granola bar in your purse or bag (not sure how old you are). For a quick fix when you get that faint, you could suck on a piece of candy, but then you need to eat something as soon as you can. I snack on cheese sticks and nuts at work. Basically, if you eat something small every few hours to keep your sugar on track, you shouldn't have these problems anymore. Good luck.

Yeah...I don't know how much of this is an asthma medicatoin problem, but sounds more like hypoglycemia...

Prednisone can cause hypoglycemia if you're still on it.

I've been on prednisone twice in the past year, only for 5 days at a time, first time 40 mg per day, second time 60 mg per day..and I've had a cortisone shot for my ankle..
I've had this happen before I was on asthma medication, only it always appeared with my period..I have hormonal imbalances so I'm on bcp's now. But I assumed then it was b/c I used 2 be really anemic, i'm on & off anemic now. I originally thought it was just from having low red blood cell count..could it still be?
Will hypoglycemia go away if thats it? Can it be treated?

Ask your doctor about getting a CBC. This will check if you're anemic right now and will also check your glucose levels. When was your last prednisone dose? If you faint before getting a dr. appt, then go to the ER (I know, I know, it sucks to go there) But that'll just rule out anything else, and they'd probably do a blood draw.

Monacks had some very good ideas. Have a water bottle with you all the time and sip on it, even when you're not thirsty. A granola bar or another small snack is a good idea to have in your purse or bag, and maybe something like a bag of creme savers or another kind of candy.

I would make sure you always have food with you like the others said. However, I have the same problem, I only take my meds on a full stomach, and make sure I eat regularly. I get acid reflux and am on medictaion for that which also helps. Your body is not designed to go for 6 hours without food. Make sure you eat properly!
Ok lecture over!
Hope you manage to get it sorted soon.

I haven't read all replies here - but when I've been in hospital the nurse always makes sure I have somthing in my stomach before swalling the prednisolone. Says it eases the nausea that may result.

For high doses of Ventolin (usually nebulised) I'm just given potassium (K) drink or IV - since at high doses causes hypokalemia, or low K levels. I'm not sure if you can get the oral form as OTC in the pharmacy or not since this is given to me in hosp.
