Looking for some advice here. I'm 30 years old and have always had irregular periods (except for when I was on birth control pills). I've been off of the BCP for a year now and my periods are even more irregular than they were before I went on the pill. Starting to be 8-10 weeks between cycles. Normally, that wouldn't really bother me except that my husband and I would like to get pregnant. How do you know when or even if you are ovulating? It's really frustrating because I want to get pregnant, but I don't want to wait several years. As I said, I'm already 30 and I'm sure not getting any younger.
If anyone else has been through this and/or has any tips, words of advice, comforting thoughts...please share!

I myself am 30 & trying for my 3rd child but have irregular periods! I know your frustration. We've been trying for 4 yrs now.
Have you ever tried charting your temperature? It's really not all that hard to do. If you do a search for places to chart your BBT you will come up with places to keep track of your temps & you'll learn lots! Most of the places that allow you too chart online also have message boards & you will learn tons of helpful imformayion on how to tell when your fertile. ;) They will teach you how to track your cervical position, cervical mucus, & your temps will teach you alot about when to expect ovulation/Aunt Flow. I hope some of this imfo helpped?

If you're really wanting to get pregnant and are only having periods every 8-10 weeks, I wouldn't waste time trying to get pregnant on my own. I'd go ahead and talk to my GYN about it.

I got pg after trying for 7 months. My periods came every 3-4 months or whenever they feel like it. My sister went a year without a period, but then a month after starting thyroid meds, she was pg.
However, the best way to go about it is probably to talk to a gyn about it, and try to get regular periods, and of course doing your own work(charting etc) I did all that but wasn't commited enough to it, so it didn't really help me. I am sure I didn't offer you much help, just wanted to let you know it IS possible. Good luck,

He already knows I've been having the problems with irregularity and my annual appointment is March 2nd. He said we would talk about options when we got together. I really don't want to go on fertility medicine because I'm afraid of the multiple births. Not necessarily twins, but more than that is scary. I actually would love to have twins. My aunt had twins, so I know what having twins entails. I'm not crazy. I promise.
Anyway, hopefully we'll exhaust other options first. I bought a basal thermometer and an ovulation checker yesterday to see if I'm even ovulating. If I'm ovulating regularly, I should be fertile in about a week. We'll see.

I had irregular periods for most of my life until a few years ago when I suddenly have been straightened out...I'm perimenopausal and as regular as clockwork.
I had two pregnancies, so yes, it is very possible. Had trouble conceiving my second baby for four years until I did the basal body temp and I hit the bullseye the first month! I did take clomid a few years later in hopes of having baby #3, but no luck then.:( Of course, by then I was 35 so age maybe had something to do with it.

Multiples is actually not as common on fertility drugs as we are lead to believe. Take Clomid for example(it is the most common and first used fertility drug) it only has between a 5 to 10% chance of one getting pregnant with mulitiples. Heck the odds of pregnancy each month are higher than that.
A good book you should rea dit Taking Charge Of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. It has tons of great info and you can have some really great questions and such to ask your doctor that way you can see if he is the right doctor to handle any fertility issues. Trust me just because he is a doctor you trust doesnt mean he will know how to help you if you need it.

I have always had irregular periods, ranging from 10-14 weeks. When my husband and I decided to start a family, I went straight to my doctor to make sure everything was o'k. My doctor ran the standard hormone tests to check to see everything was o'k. Everything was o'k, but she decided before she sent me to a specialist, to have my husband's sperm tested to ensure everything was o'k there. Before he even had a chance to have the test I discovered I was pregnant. I fell pregnant in the first cycle we didn't use contraception. I was 6 weeks pregnant, and 12 weeks since my last period. Therefore the doctor said it must have been about 6 weeks before I ovulated, making that cycle 12 weeks.

For those of you that posted saying that you have irregular periods, did your doctors ever tell you why your periods were irregular? I had a scary episode last week (I posted regarding the severe pain I had that coincided with my last period) that prompted me to do some research online. I went off the pill about a year ago, and my periods have been really irregular this entire year. I never really thought it was anything to be concerned about, but thru my research I realized that usually irregular periods are a sign that somethings not right. My husband have been trying this entire year, but no luck.
I have my doctors appointment on Thursday to talk to her about this, but I would really like your input about what you guys think. Does having irregular periods mean something is definitely wrong? What causes irregular periods? I know there are always exceptions, but is medical intervention usually necessary in order to get pregnant?
Any thoughts would be appreciated!!! :D

Just because your periods are irregular doesnt mean nessecarily that there is anything wrong. My periods have been irregular all of my life, with the exception of the time i was taking BC. My doctor told me that the reason they are irregular is because every month your ovaries are supposed to switch and dispurse the eggs. Thats why sometimes you only cramp on one side or some periods are alot easier and less severe then others. This could mean that one of your ovaries is less active then the other. Not that its completely messed up, just less active. This doesnt mean you dont ovulate. AND also ladies check and make sure you are not a nehmic. (Low iron in your blood) this too can cause irregular periods. My periods used to come 6 times a year growing up. Now they only come 4 times. The only reason it will be harder for me to become pregnant is because I dont have that set schedule every month. But if you take your bbt and monitor everything correctly (just a little more work:rolleyes:) then you should be okay.
