View Full Version : I'm a 10 hour old ex-tobacco chewer!

I had my last of the tobacco last night at 9:30 p.m. The time has come. Now it's my turn. I know that I've got a long way to go, but by the grace of God, I'll make it this time - taking it one day at a time.

I have been prescribed Zyban (the 150mg. XL as well as the 300mg. XL stuff), but am not going to use it unless absolutely necessary. I am chewing the herbal, non-tobacco stuff and plan on quitting this after a short period of time. I wonder how important drinking lots of water might be?

I'll keep you guys posted on my progress.

Take care,

Dave

badbackdavid, Way to go and congratulations! You can only go up in life now that you are a non-smoker, like Laurie says, "no more stinkin" too! Just remember, it's only the 1st week that is really tough, after the 1st week, it definitely will get much easier.

One thing I want to tell you about the Zyban/Wellbutrin is, you either take them everyday or don't take them at all. These type of drugs don't work by taking them occasionally, they only work if you take them daily, as they have to build up in your system. Just wanted to let you know that, so you won't wonder why they don't seem to help if you only take them every now and then. They do work well though for reducing cravings.

And yes, drinking an abundent amount of water is important for you at this time. It will help flush all of the nicotene and toxins out of your body much faster. Juices are good too! :D

Try to keep yourself as stress free as possible these 1st few crucial weeks, and come here all you need to for support!

Have a good day, and know that you have support here anytime you need it!!! Yay David!!!!!

Deda,

Thanks for your words. You said, "Just remember, it's only the 1st week that is really tough, after the 1st week, it definitely will get much easier." Do you (or Laurie or anyone else for that matter) think that this applies for being on the patch or for cold turkey or both?

I agree with you regarding the Wellbutrin. It can take up to a few weeks to achieve it's benefits. But to be honest with you, I don't think that I'm going to need it. From a psychological standpoint, I like the fact that the prescription is there at my house and have that option.

You said, "Try to keep yourself as stress free as possible these 1st few crucial weeks." So true and am going to be ducking, weaving and bobbing all and any unnecessary stress. Somethings can't be avoided and I know that.

Enough of me, how about you? What's your plans with the patch?

Well, take care and again thanks for your concern,

Dave

David--

Well my statement about the 1st week being the toughest, this being from my point of view...for ME it was hell the 1st week, (and I hear a lot of people say the same thing). It really felt that after my 1st week it became easier and I felt less anxious. I used the patch, and left it on every waking hour. The reason I took it off at bedtime is it caused me to have vivid dreams, that at times were disturbing. (But that's just me, it might not happen to YOU). There's people here that quit cold turkey that say they felt much butter after the first week, and I'm sure you'll hear from some of them too. (Laurie).

That's fine about not using the Wellbutrin too, but if it makes you feel more secure to have it there in the house, more power to you David.

My plans for the patch? They are still there in my drawer (giving me that security feeling as well). I'm chewing about 3 pieces of gum per day, I still need the oral stim and I'm not ready to let go yet of that little tiny bit of nicotene. LOL No big deal as far as I'm concerned...the bottom line is I'm not smoking. :blob_fire (No lectures Laurie!LOL)

Yes, keep that stress down to a bare minimum David, if you can. I know that's hard, but don't give yourself any added stress. You know how we do that by worrying about things, etc., so take things easy for a while.

And WOW, 10 hours without chew...that AWESOME!!!!!!! :nono:
Now...I can't remember, but are you giving up cigarettes as well as the chewing tobacco??

Hang around all you want...

D,

I'm giving up chewing tobacco only - Copenhaugen to be exact. 1 can a day, everyday for the last 25 years. I was curious about at what point do things start to come down the backside of the craving curve. It seems like the general answer to this is about a week. I was just wondering if this general answer was for patch wearers or cold-turkey people.

Thanks again,

Dave

David--

I just asked my husband when did his cravings settle down, (he quit with nic gum 11 months ago). He said that it was NEVER hell for him, 1. because he wasn't around any smokers at work. (but he was here at home with me, for another 6 months after he quit, tho I only smoked outside) 2. He said, (and this was the biggest one)...because he had made up his mind 100% that he never wanted to smoke again, and 3. that by chewing around 6 pieces of nic gum per day, the withdrawl cravings were minimulized. (Personally, I think patches work better as they deliver a constant flow of nicotene into your bloodstream). He continues to chew 2 pieces of gum per day. He has never had a relapse...I have. I think our motivation is a huge factor in how much mental pain we go through with this. He doesn't seem to work as hard as I do at remaining smoke free, yet, I'm the one on the message lists and praying all the time, etc. LOL!! ;)
Pretty soon I'm sure Laurie will post about her take on this from the cold turkey side of it.

Keep strong now...

Sorry I'm late. LOL Yes, hell week is for whatever you use I think. Quitting cold turkey - the first 3 days were HELL. Actually day 2 and 3 cuz day 1 you're psyched about quitting. LOL After that it gets easier - although some days will still be tough but nothing compared to week one.

Once you get to 30 days then you feel much safer (takes 21 days to break a habit) - although you're always reminding yourself to not let your guard down and you do that forever if you have to. I choose to stay away from old situations that might cause a relapse. If I wanted to tie one on (bday) - I wouldn't do it at a club for fear of me maybe being too drunk and not remembering that I'm a nonsmoker. LOL HAHAHHAHAHAHA Soooooooooo when my bday comes around if I feel like drinking a bit more than usual then I'll just stay here at home so there's no risk. :)

Now Dave - I thought it was agreed on the zyban or wellbutrin. Remember when we said "DON'T LET IT FOOL YA?" Well DON'T! LOL I thought you had that condition as well which is all the more reason to get on it and stay on it. I'm giving you heads up on this because I'm serious when I tell you that you might feel like your running the ship 24/7 and then BAM outta nowhere - he comes this very weird /strange craving. When I least expected it - now maybe you'll get lucky and this won't happen, but I want you to be safe if it does happen.

Granted - nothin was strong enough to make me break down but still - it was an unexpected craving. Take the pills :)
