I'm a type 1 but overweight (always have been) and my doctor just added glucophage xr 500 mg to insulin regimen in an attempt to get my morning sugars down. I took one last nite and didn't notice much of a difference. Does it take several weeks to have a maximum effect, or build up in the system?

No, you should notice a change quickly. Glucophage in type 1's doesn't do much. The only way to get the numbers down on a regular basis is to increase insulin intake. Glucophage for type 1's works to help the liver filter out glucose and dump stored insulin. Since everyone's liver works differently to a point, Glucophage isn't reliable for constant control.
I went on Glucophage as an overweight type 1. I am not on an insulin only regimin since the Glucophage was a waste of time for me. I wish you better luck

Glucophage or Metformin will do nothing for a Type 1 diabetic. It's like throwing money down the drain. Metformin is only effective in Type 2 diabetics.

I inquired about Glucophage being used for Type 1 diabetics and I was told that more and more doctors are attempting to use Glucophage for Type 1 diabetics in an attempt to reduce the need for insulin ( but insulin injections will always be needed). From what I was told, it does prove to decrease units of insulin needed slightly but usually not enough to warrant the cost of adding Glucophage to the medication regime.

Thank you all for your responses. My main problem is morning sugars and I think the doctor said it will help my a.m. problems with the liver dumping glucose.
