Hi new to this message board but not to RA. I take 20mg methotrexate a week but it makes me feel really sick for a few days. Some weeks I don't take the proper dose because i don't want to feel so ill. Docs are not interested!! Anyone else have this problem.
Thanks

Hi Caregirl,
I'm sorry you have RA,but I wouldn't take anything that made me sick. There are too many others that you can try. Believe me,I do understand about the Drs. though and it's even worse if you don't have insurance. However,if you keep looking you can find one that truly cares. Good luck to you! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks for the reply! there are certain things I can't take because of stomach problems but I will be seeing my specialist in August so I will ask about alternative drugs

Hi there!
Sorry to hear you feel so bad on MTX. I'm also new to PA and am to start MTX next week - do you take folic acid - heard this is supposed to help a lot.
What dose did you start off on - they are starting me on 2.5 mg per week! Are you able to drink alcohol on it? I enjoy a glass of wine when we go out and think i'd miss this!!

Hi, I take 5mg folic acid a week (when I remember)I did start on a small dose 5mg, but I have been taking them for a few years now and I felt ok until i reached 20mg. I also take Motilium (anti sickness tablet)but after taking so many other tablets all at once I can't always stomach taking any more. I am going to ask about having the MTX injected. Please don't be put of the MTX because my RA has been loads better since I have been on them

I drank on occasion while taking methotrexate and never had a problem. Of course, you're not supposed to drink at all, but hey! On each doctor visit though they drew blood to keep an eye on iron levels, liver function, etc.

Hi Caregirl,
I am on methetrexate as well.... 20mg a week.... the pills definately made me feel sick, so my rhematologist switched me to the injection.... best thing i ever did.....
Every Sunday I have an injection of methetrexate in my thigh or arm.... its just a little needle... I find it controls my arthritis better and I don't ever feel sick....
I do have to go for blood work every month too.....
Hopefully switching to the injectable form is an option for you....
Good luck - take care.

Thanks Christy, I will definitely be asking my Doc about having the MTX injected, I'm glad it worked for you. Take care too!

Hi Caregirl,
I was on MTX and I felt sick to my stomach and stayed in bed whole next day after the treatment. My doc took me off of it due to my tongue swelling and tingling after taking it the 5th time. I do take nexium to help with the stomach stuff and it does seem to work. I take mobic, plaquinil and prednisone for the RA as of now. Plaquinil I understand takes a couple months to really feel the effects although I do feel much better than when I was taking th mtx. Good luck, I hope you feel better.
