Hi:

My name is Angie. I've been posting replies, and realized I didn't introduce myself. I am mom to a 10 month old baby (former 25-week preemie). I have complex partial epilepsy, that is under control at this time, unlike my other health problems.

The question (or 2): has anyone on trileptal had hair loss as a side effect? I noticed it when my dosage was raised. I am unsure if it's the trileptal or something else ( I recently had an abnormal thryoid test result). It's confusing. I was on trileptal before I was pregnant, and lost some hair (not this much). I am also wondering if trilpetal or topamax can have adverse effects on your thyroid function.

I hope everyone is well,

Angie

HI Angie, (That is my grnadma's name and my sister in law also!)

I would think the culprit for hair loss can be a combination of the meds, post pregnancy hormones and the thyroid. Make sure you point it out to the doctor to be sure.

I do not know how either med affects thyroid function, but I guess it is possible. Try putting this in a google or dogpile search to see what comes up...

Hope your baby is doing fine now!

Thanks for the post. I have already done the google search re the meds/hairloss and thyroid function, which yielded nothing. The post-pregnancy hormone issue is possible, it just seems a little late, as Alexander (my little man) is 10 months old actual (a little under 7 adjusted for prematuratity). I am having my thyroid retested, so that should shed some more light on the situation.

The baby, Alex, is doing quite well, considering how complicated his life was at the start. He struggled for survival for weeks in NICU, and fought infections, IVH (brain bleed, grade 3), had 2 seizures, reflux, jaundice...the list goes on... Now, you wouldn't know he was a preemie except that he is smaller than your average 10 month old and he doesn't crawl yet. he gets PT once a week. He has already been weaned off his phenobarbitol too, with no apparent seizures so far. Thanks for asking about him.

Hoping the thyroid test shed some light on what is going on. I have hair loss, neg for thyroid trouble and a bunch of other things are ruled out. Use every hair strengthening product I can, LOL.

Your little man sounds like a gem and a realy fighter!!

The vitamin wouldn't hurt. I have other messed up symptoms that make me think something is going on (outside of my 'normal' health porblems): ie my menstrual cycles are all over the place even tho I am oon the pill, constant migraines, weakness.... I hope we figure something out.
Thanks for the post,

Angie
