I guess the title asks the question. After talking to my different dr's we decided to give this a shot and see if anything happens. Has anyone else tried this?

No,I'm talking about the depo provera shot. It's a birth control but for most women it keeps them from having a period at all. Just curious if anyone else has tried it

i havent heard of the depo shot for epilepsy, but then again im new to all this. i do know my sister had endometriosis and she takes the shot to stop her period. if the threads ive read on seizures around your period are right on i could see how it would help. i dont have epilepsy but i have been on it and it stopped my period flat out. :) hope you have good luck with it. thats something i would have never thought of to try. but to for warn you...it kills your sex drive :D . good luck with it and i hope it helps you out.

And the sex drive part for me its kinda workin oppisite on that and i called and asked them see before I didn't have much of a sex drive and now its there 24/7 lol I'm sure you didnt want to know all that they say it does different things to different people so I guess we'll see :) :wave:

That is all very interesting. When I first started having seizures (which we now know are related to my hormones and happen most frequently around my period) I had just happened to also start on Depo-Provera. I do think this controlled my seizures, though there is no way for me to prove it. I had been on the shot for almost 4 years, or maybe 5. At one point while I was on it, my neurologist took me off my seizure meds also- When I did come off Depo- I started Loestrin(birth control) while on no other seizure meds- I went a year seizure free being just on Loestrin. Then, later I accidentallly stopped my birth control all together because of issues with my insurance- then, boom! I started having seizures monthly. This was my first time having gran mals that often- so we realized that somehow my birthcontrol had controlled my seizures that year I was off meds... it's weird, but somehow having a stabilized period helped with my seizures. I am actually now looking at taking Progesterone. Do you know if Depo-provera has a higher level of progesterone? Apparently it is the estrogen that causes seizures and any fluctuations in estrogen...

Becca I find what you say very interesting and after doing some thinking I realized that there was a couple years that I didn't have seizures and in that time I was on the pill didn't think anything of it until after reading your post I wonder if the dr's know this?

I am a 40 year old mother of 3. I've been taking tegretol now for 15 years and have been seizure free. I had a lot of problems period wise and was on Lupron and tegretol before having a partial hysterectomy. I can’t remember what the dosage was but it did stop the period and put my in a menopause state..hot flashes, no hair growth, weepy. The side affects for me were bad, but my family survived through it. All epilepsy medication has side affects. I hope this works for you.

Just a quick footnote, Depo Provera and Depo Lupron are two different drugs. I just wanted to mention that for those who may be confused on that. I know I was before I started the Lupron!!

My almost 8 year old daughter started Lucrin injections (mini depo) approx 18 months ago. Blood tests showed that she has true precocious puberty (started developing at 3 1/2 and periods started at 4yrs 11 months). The Lucrin has been beneficial in 2 ways: it has stopped further development, and totally stopped the periods. Prior to starting these injections my little girl had uncontrollable seizures while she both menstruated and ovulated - she was living on diazepam during these times to stop the seizures but she was also a total zombie.

She now has fewer seizures and no periods so it is all good.
