Hi,

I'm 62, female and overweight by 60 lbs. I've had a total left knee replacement and have an arthritic right knee. My ortho strongly recommended :nono: that I no longer use my treadmill, even in moderation, as it will wear the new parts out more quickly and I'll have to have the operation repeated sooner.

What cardio vascular excersises are there that will take the place of brisk walking to get my heart rate up to burn calories?

Can anyone recommend a video tape or any other way, aside from walking, that has been just as effective in raising the heart rate, without the above walking or jogging?

I'm desperate!

Ali

Your doctor told you what not to do. Did you ask him or her what you could do? That's where you should start.

Or, see a physical therapist. I would think the extra weight would wear out the new joints, but I'm not a doctor. You can do some strengthening exercises with weights and upper body to improve muscle mass which should help you burn more calories, but it seems to me that everyone needs some sort of exercise.

Yes, he told me I could cycle but that doesn't seem to get my heart rate up and gets my legs super sore. Think I'll try the upper body weight training thing as one poster suggested and go from there. It's been a discouraging two years.

Thanks for your responses.
