I am wondering if anyone has had a Novasure Ablation. I had one last Friday along with a Laparoscopy, D&C and a Hysteroscopy. It went really well but I thought I would be bleeding afterwards to get rid of the lining of the uterus. I am not bleeding which is really good but it is weird. :bouncing: I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

I had the ablation due to heavy periods every month and it is suppose to stop my bleeding all together. :)

Thanks!!

Hi, I had an ablation done and my tubes cauterized also due to heavy periods and lots of cramping. I bled for ablout 6 weeks although i think I got my period in that time too. My bleeding eventually just got to be very light and tinged mucus. I do still have periods though. They are very light - no more than a thin pad or panty liner. Also hardly any cramping. The only other difference I notice is that I now spot when I ovulate. I never did that before. In April it will be a year for me and each month has been different so far. This past month was the lightest ever so maybe they will eventually stop altogether. I don't know if it's normal to not have a discharge after a procedure like this. They told me it was normal TO have a discharge. Maybe you could just put a phone call in to your doctor?

HI, Thanks for the reply. What type of ablation did you have done? They did a NovaSure Ablation on me and a Laporoscopy and a D&C. I guess I have
severe endometriosis too. I don't know if they will do anything for that. Anyways my Gyn told me that I would bleed and it would be clotty and dark red, almost black. I was due for my period the day I had surgery but it is 6 days later and still no bleeding or anything. I am happy but wondering if the surgery worked. I go in on Monday for a check-up and to get my two stitches removed. So are you happy with your results? I will be fine even if I get my period as long as it is controllable. Well thanks again for your info.Have a great evening.

I'm not sure what kind they did, but it sounded kind of like the thermachoice that I've read about because he said the procedure was to fill a balloon with really hot sterile water insided the uterus and it burns the lining of the uterus therefore damaging it. He told me I could only have it done once in my lifetime because of the burning of the uterine walls. If they ever did it again there would be a significant risk of rupturing the walls. I also had a lap done to check for endo. The only thing they found was varicose veins the size of the doctors thumbs. Huge, he said and probably causes some of the pain I was feeling when on my feet or doing lots of walking. When I go for my one year checkup I am going to ask him if there is anything they can do about the veins or if they pose any danger. He didn't seem concerned at the time. I never had any dark red or almost black bleeding at all. It was mostly light pink and watery discharge. Nothing major. It just went on for at least a month. I am very happy with the results. No more running to the bathroom because it's running down my leg or a heating pad on my stomach for 2 days. I don't get any of the achiness in my pelvic area at all. Maybe your ablation was different. Did it involve burning the lining? I would be interested to know the difference if there is one.

Thanks for the reply. The ablation that I had done is supposedly the newest technique. It did involve burning the lining of the uterus but it was through energy and I guess it gets to all of the corners of the uterus so it is suppose to be very effective. My GYN was very confident that there would be no more bleeding. So far I am very pleased. I have had a little pink watery discharge but that only lasted for the first 6 days. Right now there has been nothing. I go in for my 2 week check-up on Monday so I will find out what all she did and if I need anything else for my endom. I hope not, I can deal with a little pain every month w/out any bleeding. :) I am glad to hear from someone else that has had an ablation. Thanks!!

I'm glad both of you posted about your experiences with the ablation procedures. I was diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia about four months ago. I had all the tests done to make sure I wasn't bleeding anywhere internally (colonoscopy, endoscopy & bowel series x-rays), and they were all normal. The biopsy also showed that my body absorbs iron okay.

Well, the next step was for me to go to my gynocologist. When doing the exam, he said he thought he felt a small fibroid. So, I had a vaginal ultrasound done...it shows that I have four (small) fibroids in different areas of my uterus.

My gyn. put me on a low dose birth control pill (Alesse) to try to lighten my heavy periods hoping that this will alleviate my anemia.

Well, I've been on this birth control pill for four months, and it has lightened my periods (about in half), however, now I seem to get my period every three weeks instead of every four like I used to...and my period now lasts about 9-10 days instead of 5.

I have a follow up appt. with my gyn. next Friday. I'm thinking that the pills may not be strong enough for me. The thing I don't like about taking any higher dose pill is that breast cancer runs in my family, and therefore, I really don't want to take a higher dosage.

Oh, I forgot to mention, that I cannot have my four fibroids removed or cauterized (or whatever the different procedures are), because I was told that it is too risky.

So...since I hate the pill, I am considering having the ablation procedure done...I didn't know there were different types/ways of having it done.

My dr. last visit gave me a brochure on it to read.

Hi, I am guessing that you are done having children or you probably wouldn't want to have an ablation done. My GYN highly recommened the NovaSure Ablation because it removes the lining of the uterus through electrical energy and it can get to all corners of the uterus so none of the lining can be missed and then bleed later. I am not sure about all of the other types but I am very happy with the one that I chose. It was a very easy surgery and I was out to a Valentine party the next evening. I thought it was very easy and not painful, just a few cramps afterwards. Well good luck with whatever Ablation you chose. I think you will be glad that you did. :)

Renee, thanks for the info. on the NovaSure Ablation. I'm 44 years old & don't plan on giving birth to any children, so the procedure would probably be perfect for me. I just wonder what happens to the fibroids that I have...I guess the lining of the uterus is burned away, but the fibroids remain?

Do you only have to have the ablation done once, or do some women have to have it done again at some point and time?

What are some of the questions I should have ready to ask my doctor when I go for my follow-up (birth control pill) visit?

Thanks...Robin

Hi Robin-

I am not sure what happens to your fibroids. Maybe they can remove them while they are in there. I have read on an ablation website that some women have had an ablation done more than once. It depends on the type of ablation that you have done. My GYN recommended the newest which is the NovaSure, she was very confident that it would solve my problems and would only have to be done once. I go in today for my post-surgery check up. I would ask your Dr. what types of ablations they do and ask if they do the NovaSure ablation. You may also want to see if they would do a laporoscopy too that way they can check to see if you have endometriosis or ovarian cysts. If you have too much going on a Hysterectomy might be your cure. I am hoping that I don't need that yet as I am not ready. Good Luck!! Have a Super Day!!

I've never heard of the NovaSure ablation. I had the thermochoice (balloon) ablation done last July. Best thing I ever did. I was bleeding almost constantly (sometimes severly) for about 1-1/2 years. Also had a d&c, hysteroscopy and tubal ligation done. I bled a little bit for a few weeks but eventually stopped. Now my periods are extremely light. What a difference! I would recommend this procedure to anyone who is a good candidate for it. Need to discuss this with your doctor.

Thanks for all the input...unfortunately, I can't have my fibroids removed, because it's too risky...could bleed too much, my doctors say. I've been told that the fibroids should shrink the closer I get to menopause & should eventually go away...of course, that could be anywhere from six to ten years from now. As long as the fibroids are not causing me pain or getting a lot larger, I can live with them.

The only way for me to get rid of the fibroids now would be to have my uterus removed, and both my dr. and I feel that this is unnecessary. I don't have endometriosis or cysts.

As far as my heavy periods, I think my choices right now are to either go on a stronger dose of birth control pill (which I'm not thrilled about) or to have the ablation procedure.

I'll let you know what happens after I go to the gyn. on Friday.

If the fibroids are on the inside of your uterus they have to be removed first before an ablation can be done. And since you say the doctors said they couldn't be removed an ablation wouldn't work for you.

Obviously, now I'm confused! My dr. gave me a brochure to read about ablation. But, he told me it's too risky to remove my fibroids. I guess I'll clear this up tomorrow morning when I have my appointment.

Hi Everyone,
I have just been told that I will need a D&C/Hysteroscopy and a possible Ablation. I am a nervous wreck. I have never had surgery before.
I am 55 and after a year and a half started bleeding very heavy. I had a biopsy which thank G-d was negative and then a saline infusion ultrasound which showed that my lining was thicker than it should be. I think he said 8 and 5 was normal.
My biggest problem is that my doctor whom I have been going to for over 30 years just stopped operating and now I will have to go to one of his associates for the surgery. That really put me in a tailspin.
They told me they use conscious sedation and that I would not remember a thing. Has anyone else has this kind of sedation?
Please comfort me.

Linda

Dawn, hi...I am scheduled to have the Thermachoice uterine ablation next Tuesday, and also a D&C at the same time. I'm sort of scared, because I hate hospitals, but the prospect of having my period greatly reduced or eliminated I think will be worth it. My gyn. says that in his practice, he's had about an 85% sucess rate with the Thermachoice ablation procedure...meaning, that 85% of the women have had their period greatly reduced or even eliminated each month. It's good to hear from someone who's had the same procedure.

Oh, I forgot to post about this...my gyn. has told me that because I have fibroids (4 of them), he'll do a D&C first, then look at my uterus with the scope (camera) to see if the uterine ablation (thermachoice) can be done. He told me that if the fibroids are huge or blocking the opening to my uterus, then the uterine ablation couldn't be done. However, when I had my ultrasound done a few months ago, the fibroids were 3mm and 4mm, which are still really small...so, my dr. doesn't think there will be a problem in doing the ablation. Also, I having general anesthesia...what type has everyone else who's had an ablation had???

After reading all the notes here, I am hoping to eliminate these damn periods altogether. My gyn told me 80% experience min bleeding and 50% have none after this. I figure a 10 minute procedure is worth trying if I can lose all the symptoms and a bit of hell each month. Especially for my children's sake, the mood swings have taught them when and how to approach Mom for 2 days each month. LOL I feel like I'm losing body parts when the mense starts!
