View Full Version : Sore legs from running?

I'm taking grade 12 co-ed gym while I'm a female grade 11 student, so there is a bit more physical activity than I'm used to. We ran a 'shuttle run', a fitness test which basically involves a lot of rigorous running and pivoting. Ever since then, the fronts of my legs, like my shins, have been killing me! I don't understand why, since there is hardly any muscle there, but moving my feet around hurts.
Is this some sort of muscle strain I don't know about? How can I help it heal?

Well, you might have what some people call "shin splints" don't worry, the bone isn't literally splintering, but if you had alot of hard impacts with your feet (especially if they weren't pointed straight) then it's your bones, joints and tendons that will feel it, not your muscles. I've had these so called "shin splints" a few times when I was younger and they went away after about 3-4 weeks, but I would go see a doctor anyways, you never know what could be going on in there.

That's my experience from what your describing.

I don't know about you but I've had shin splints too but at a much older age and it took a long time to heal (a few months) of not running. I kept running with the shin splints and after a while it hurt just to stand. What shin splints are is essentially you have a tendon that runs from the bottom of your foot that connects up to the calf bone or muscle in your leg and you generally feel the pain in the bone, like a deep bruise in the front or side of your calf. Best way of getting rid of shin splints is to just stop doing what hurt it in the first place. I'd talk to your gym teacher about it and if he/she won't let you take it easy then go see a doctor and get a note from the doc. The pain may be much less once you get warmed up a lot but you're still doing damage even though you don't feel it at the time and once you cool off your shins will hurt again and probably worse. Also a common cause of shin splints can be improper shoes or worn out shoes. Everyone has a different running style and way that the foot impacts the ground when running and not having the right shoe for your style can create or add to the problem.

Thanks for the replies. I asked my parents if I could see a doc for this but, typically, they don't believe me. (sighs)
"Honey, only runners who run marathons and people who jog every day get shin splints, you just pulled a muscle."

Yeah well people that jog every day and run marathons don't usually get shin splints because of the fact they are used to running. It's gotten by a lot of people that do some running that aren't used to it. It's not something you need to see a doctor about though. It will heal up but you just need to limit your running for a few months.
