View Full Version : The Flu And High Bp

Can Your Blood Pressure Go Up When You Are Sick With The Flu? I Woke Up With The Flu At 2:30 This Morning, And My Bp Was 150/95 And My Pulse Was 190....which Sounds Ridiculous, Because My Heart Isnt Racing, I'm Not Dizzy, And I Dont Have A Headache? Can My Bp Machine Be Completely Off? It's A Pretty Scarey Thought, To Have A Pulse That High, When Normally It Is At 65...and 120/80....has This Ever Happened To Any Of You?
Thanks Cathy

Hey Randy one,

God knows what blood pressure will do in response to an illness as overwhelming as influenza; ditto with pulse rate.
BUT, your pulse rate can be easily measured with a second hand and fingers on your wrist or neck...Check it out this way and compare: perhaps your tester is indeed faulty. Why not also test it on a person not "under the inflenza?" :D:D

(Yeah, 190, if accurate, is DEFINITELY a reason to call your doctor....or even get to an ER, unless you have a history of atrial flutter or fibrillation).

What you've described is not unusual. I have a friend in his early 40s, no blood pressure problems who had his BP shoot up to 140/100 when he had a bad bout of the flu.

Also, like zip mentioned, 190 is a rather high heart rate when you're at rest. Perhaps you'd want to check with your doctor about this.

Hope you recover soon! :)
