View Full Version : Is it possible?

On November 1st of 1993 around 7 am I had my first seizure. I was 10 years old and it was thought to be an "overdose on sugar" from Halloween night. It was snowing and there was ice on the road. The ambulatory service didnt want to come out because they didnt feel it was severe enough to be called. When they finally arrived, I was into my 3rd seizure. My mother had no clue what was going on.
They diagnosed me later with Epilepsy. Grand mal seizures. They never thought I would "grow out" of it. Instead, I took every drug on the market for Epilepsy but found only one that worked. Amzingly it was Carbamazepine (Tegretol).
My last seizure (that i know of) was in May of 1995. That was due to stress, death of a loved one, and through all of it, forgetting to take my medication.
I stopped taking Tegretol soon there after. (I believe it was in Sept. or October) They told me that I had "grown out" of my seizures.
Now, I am 20 years old and married. I still have these severe dizzy spells and pass out rather often. I am concerned that it might be remnants of my previous Epilepsy. Is it possible? I am afraid to go to the doctor, because I am afraid he would laugh in my face for such an odd concern, but I am just wondering if maybe I do still have the Epilepsy. Maybe it never left, but was just dormant. Is it possible?

Hi Sweet,

Yes, it is possible and very likely. Given your history with E, you are a prim candadate for it to come back although it may present it's self in a different manner then your prior seizures.

I have 2 E kids. And we've been told that by looking at the pattern on the EEG, (Jake's age 2) that he will mostly deal with some form of activity most of his life. That it may go dormant (sp) sometime during childhood to return during a life change phase - hormonal changes in his early teens, or early adulthood, entering middle age, entering old age... My daughter Jenny (15) well... we're not sure, her EEG's have always came back clean! So it's a wait and see thing with her.

Yes, call your Dr and get a neuro appt.

BTW: Jenny got complete control on the first med she tried... yep Tegratol! Jake is taking Trileptol and Lamictol.

Keep us posted and be careful.

Love and light

I havent seen my neurologist since 1996....Im kinda scared to go back. What would be the best way to find a good neuro in my area? I looked in the phone book, and asked other doctors, but they all tell me that Huffstutter was the only one good enough. I just have personal issues with going back to him. What can I do?

Have you been to a doctor for the dizzy spells? What did they say? I think you should go the neuro and have another EEG just to make sure that they aren't seizures. It seems scary...like you don't want to know but identifying them will help you KNOW what you are dealing with and how to treat it. God be with you.
