I've been reading alot of posts lately where people are quitting their SSRI cold turkey. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE taper off of the drug slowly! There are many withdrawal side effects associated with going off these drugs cold turkey. The longer you have been taking the SSRI, the longer you need to stretch out the weaning process. If you have been taking the SSRI for longer than 2 years, it would be beneficial to wean slowly over the course of a year to prevent the withdrawal side effects.
I have been doing alot of reading and researching on SSRIs and withdrawing. There is a book out called Prozac: Panacea or Pandora? that is very good for understanding the effects that SSRIs have on your brain and body as well as plenty of information backed with solid research. It may help you to understand what these drugs do to your body. She also has a tape called "Help, I can't get off of my anti-depressant!" which will help during the tapering process as well as dealing with depression after you have completely withdrawn from the anti-depressant.
I am slowly coming off of Zoloft. I am feeling better and better. But the object is to do it slowly. I know we just want to have our lives back right NOW, but if we wean too quickly, the depression comes back and we end up right back on the drug again. Believe me, I have done that more times than I can count over the last two years, I really want to make sure that this is the very last time. :)
Good luck everyone.
