Lately I have been feeling like my blood sugar levels are all over the place. I have never been diagnosed with diabetes but I am 55 and overweight with a family history of type 2 diabetes which makes me high risk I guess. It seems that every time I eat a meal that is high in carbohydrates I get so tired within 30 minutes that I can't keep my eyes open. Sometimes I am really thirsty and going to the bathroom more often than is usual. I generally can't make it through the night withut getting up at least once. When I switched to eating low carb, mostly eggs, chicken, meat, fish and low carb veggies, these problems decreased, especially the extreme post meal exhaustion, although the other day when I ate a lot of plain yogurt with honey it all came back so bad that I felt really lightheaded, had an awful headache and felt so awful that I almost took myself to the emergency room. I have an appointment with my doc on Wednesday but I wondered what you all thought, especially about the extreme post meal exhaustion, which has been really debilitating and I haven't seen mentioned when I read about diabetes. Is that typical in diabetes?
Thanks,
jfran

jfran,
Yes, that symptom is consistent and I did experience that. However, most people will experience some fatigue after eating a large meal. I guess the difference was how "tired" I was--essentially wiped out to where I could barely keep my eyes open.
Best wishes and I hope all goes well at your appt. :)

Thanks for answering. This is defnitely not your normal feel kinda sleepy after a meal type of thing. It's more like if I don't lie down I'll fall down, as if I've been heavily drugged. I know it would be dangerous for me to drive feeling this way. I've been putting this off for too long so I hope my doctor will be able to start to provide some answers.

jfran, I was recently diagnosed as type2, and I also had the groggy/sleepy symptom. I never attributed it to diabetes - I just thought it was carbs at work. I had the heavy eyelids and that drugged feeling.
Sometimes at night as I was falling asleep I would feel so dead that I was afraid to let myself fall asleep for fear that I would never wake up again. Its hard to explain but I felt like I was about to fall into a coma. When I told my doctor he said it was the blood sugar.

Extremely typical. I had the same thing.
