Hey guys... hope you can help with this one.

I was a former smoker, almost 2 years quit and never really encountered any lung or breathing issues.

Lately, I would wake up gasping for air, I would be unable to lay down or sleep. This didn't happen often, but when it did it was always 2 or 3 am and I'd have to get up and make some hot tea or something.

Now, the past 3 days I have been getting very random hot spells with an increased amount of phlegm. I can't inhale or exhale fully without hearing the griding of phlegm in my lungs. Every attempt to try and cough it up usually results in nothing or a very sticky, foul tasting, clear phlegm.

I don't physically feel sick or anything, any ideas?

PS. One more thing I should probably mention, I wheeze when breathing, this happens randomly and often.

How long and how many smoked? How old? You don't have to say, but if you smoked a long time at a high rate, and are older it sounds like maybe some form of COPD(namely chronic bronchitis), which unfortunately can occur even in people who quit-but it's so great you did, if something is going on, the worst thing you could do is keep up that habit. Obviously I can't tell you what it actually is,and I hope I'm wrong but I think you should see a doctor, who can run some tests and treat it if need be. If you're coughing up something nasty, it's not normal. Please see a doc.
