Does any one know what COPD stands for and what it is?

of course you could just look in the "search" of the internet and find it real easy. But I just did that, my Mom has this. It stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. From smokers and/or former smokers. Just click on search and type in the words and hit enter, you'll come up with all kinds of info.

I'm not a smoker and don't know if that's what I have-I just know I use an inhaler and that the inhaler is intended to help people with it.
Thanks a bunch.

I think I have COPD. I smoked from 12 years old until I was 37. I smoked over two packs a day most of those years. I am having trouble breathing [for about 9 years]after even the slightest exertion. I am not overweight and am 55 years old. I am going to see a Pulmonary Specialist. I take Singulair and inhalers Serevent and Flovent for 'asthma'. Do my symptoms seem like COPD with possibly a little emphysema? That's what I'm thinking.

I'm not sure. I am on inhalers for I had what is called ARDS-adult resptiory distress syndrome which attacks the lungs and fill them up with fluid. I think that either way you should get it checked out though.

Emphysema falls under COPD, and in most respiratory medicine books so does asthma. With your extensive smoking history 50pack years (how many packs x how many years) and your pre-existing asthma condition I would say this is a good guess, go to a pulmanologist and stick to what the doctor orders. Also join a support group in your area, ask your dr. if he knows of any.Hope you feel better soon.
