My rommate just gave me an article on this. It's not what I have, but I think others here might. I did a web search on it, and there are lots of sites out there.
Basically it means the mucus membrane in your intestines is not doing its job. Also called "Increased intestinal permeability." Apparently it's often misdiagnosed as IBS.
Symptoms: Severe diarhea, bloating, cramps.
Diagnosis: There's a test where they give you sugar with a large molecule, then test your urine and see if too many of the sugar molecules are in it.
Treatment: Among other things: acidophilus, probiotics, digestive enzymes, glutamine, DGL licorice, omega-3 fatty acides, and eating a low-fiber diet until the gut heals enough to tolerate fiber.
May be linked to: Chronic fatigue syndrome, Crohn's disease, MS, fibromyalgia, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Causes: Nothing I've read points to a definite cause, but it seems to be most closely linked to taking high doses of NSAIDs, such as Motrin, Advil, or Aleve, for an extended period of time. There are also site about "NSAID-induced gastritis," which may be the same thing.
