make sure you go to someone who specializes in asthma like a pulmonologist. i have had my asthma since high school, but just went to a family doc. undertreatment has caused me severe asthma breathing problems in adulthood.

I've had asthma about 9 or 10 years and I am in my mid 50's. It came on gradually; out of breath easily. I'm not a big exerciser but am trying to change that. I don't know if you smoked when you were younger; or were around a lot of smoke. That's what I think happened to me, though I gave up smoking at 37 years old, I started at 12! I take Flovent and Serevent 2 puffs 2x a day, or I couldn't even walk in the mall without being out of breath. It's scary. I've just started to go on a treadmill, but am not able to do it regularly yet. I hope all is okay; I just deal with it and get out of breath walking up stairs, walking very fast, etc. I feel if I can walk 30-60 minutes almost every day it would help me. Hope you feel okay. Take it slow and try not to worry.

HI,
I've had adult asthma about 15 years. It runs in our family. I didn't get it till I had gotten plursey (sp) where the lining of the lungs get infected. Was about 25 when i got it. My brother also ended up with it. None of us had it as kids.
It sucks.... sigh.

Just wanted to express my sympathies. Adult asthma is bad. I have had it for 20 years and find that it is really hard to treat.
One thing to look at is allergies. If you have pets you should probably get rid of them. I became allergic to my cats in my 20's. Took me 5 years of hell to realize that that was a big part of the problem. Anything you can do to keep the dust down in house helps. Get rid of carpets, curtins etc. Air filters are good. Food allergies can also be a problem.
Drink lots of water to keep the mucus flowing.
The preferred treatment for asthma is inhailed steroids. Didn't help me, but does it for most people. Make sure to carry your rescue inhailer with you at all times.
It is really scary and takes time to get it under control. You have to keep trying different things till you find what works for you.
I am having a particulary bad summer. The humidity and the pollen. Haven't been this bad in years. I up tonight at 2AM, because I can't breathe.
Find a good doctor and keep working at it. Hang in there.
