I was just wondering how long it took any of you to regulate your glucose levels. My husband hasn't been regulated for 10 years. It's so frustrating. He's only 29 and I really don't want to see it get worse. He's been counting his carb's and taking the right amount of insulin. But still it gets high sometimes or even low. It's so frustrating. Even so for him. I wish there was something I could do. ARe there certain foods you avoid? I also heard insulin can go bad and can result in high glucose levels. Is that true? If it is how fast can insulin go bad? I just don't get it! I'll tell him to try a different vial and he won't. He says his dr. knows what to do. Not all dr's know .....plus i know it's hard to get it under control. There are so many factors. But if any of you have an advice that would be great!!

I am assuming he has been Type 1 since around the age of 19. I have been Type 1 since the age of 21. I warn you now that some of this might come across as harsh... Some of it isn't meant to be while some of it is :D
In today's society, a Dr may see upwards of 20 patients a day. You might get 10 minutes in there with them and then you are on your way until 3 months is up. You dont get refferals unless you ask and with some Dr's, not until you beg. All of that being said, it is virtual suicide to place the responsibillity of your health solely in the hands of a Dr!! Diabetic care is a team effort where the diabetic HAS to be the head of the team. They live with the condition 24/7 so they know what works and what doesnt. By caring about your diabetes, one say's that they care about so many other things. They care about their family not losing them at a young age, they care about not having family take care of them when their complications are debillitating, they care about teaching their family that you can rise above anything thrown your way, and the list goes on.
I still struggle with taking care of my blood sugars. I counted one day and realised that I have almost taken 10,000 shots in the last 10 years!! That is a total pain in the butt IMO. You do it because you have no alternative! There really isnt anything you can do as this is his condition and only he can take charge of it. Diabetes isnt like Cancer. You can control what this does to your body, if you choose to.
Insulin is good until the expiration date in the refrigerator. Outside of the fridge, a vial is good for 28 days if kept out of the sun and extremes in temperature. He should give a vial a few days and if it doesn't bring the levels down, pitch it!!!
There is nothing I DONT eat. I am on a sliding scale so I just bolus for meals. This can be dangerous for your waistline though as too much food can make you pack on weight and since insulin is a growth hormone, you can pack on weight with too much insulin.
As a diabetic, you are doing the job of one of the internal organs. That's a big job!! You will never have diabetes so tightly controlled as a type 1 that you don't have a high or low in there. Illness and stress can wreak havoc on your numbers and those are things you cant plan for. The goal is to see the highs and treat them. The overall goal with diabetes is to have more good days than bad. Sadly, when the good days far outweigh the bad, he is considered controlled. There is just no way to guarantee every minute of every day.
I wish you both the best of luck and hope this helped. I know I have been in the same position more than I care to reflect on. Take care
