I was wondering if anyone has had to have their screws removed and what it was like? How did they remove them, time out of work and such..........

I haven't had my screws removed, but I have 2 in each toe. I was wondering if you are asking because they are causing you problems? I hope I never have any problems with mine! Ican't imagine having them taken out!

My screws in my foot are permanent , as far as I know!
I did have a pin with my left foot, but it was removed at one week post-op

Hi rileyroe,
Thanks for replying.I have 2 screws below my big toe and I have been having problems. My foot feels like I'm walking on a marble. The doctor says the screws are out of place and are pushing down on the bottom of my foot. I have to have them removed on the 2nd of March.I have not talked to anyone that has had them removed. The doctor says he is going to remove them with local. I hope it's not half as bad as the bunion surgery itself.Once again thank you for replying. Keep in touch :) Sue

Hi susieblueyes,
Funny that I should read this, as I just got home from having a screw removed from my big toe that was fused almost 1 year ago. One is still in, but this one was starting to push out because of all of my exercising, so my good dr. took it out this morning in his office. No pain to speak of really except the shots of novacane, and then he screwed it, with a lot of pressure in about 15 min time.
My foot is a little sore right now, and is bandaged. I will have my stitches out in 5 days, then be good to go. So, it is not so bad, and I avoided having to go back to the OR. Good luck to you,
Sue

Ouch Susieblueyes...what a bummer. I can't imagine it would anything near as bad as the original surgery, as your bones won't really be involved?
Good luck to you...

Sue,

Glad it wasn't a complicated procedure! How much exercising did you do? I'm worried that the same thing will happen to me since I plan to exercise as well (as soon as I can!) What were some of the symptoms of the screw being lose? Swelling? Pain?

Thanks,

Carlos

Hi Carlos,
Thanks for your concerns. I didn't exercise too much really, I run about a mile, then play singles tennis for about 90 min. 5 times a week. But apparently the screw,( there were 2 criss-crossed,) one shifted slightly and was starting to push out against my skin. And since I play in a symphony orchestra professionally, my dress shoes were rubbing against it too. So out it came today. The screw I guess was not lose, just shifted..no swelling, but pain every time I bumped it against a shoe. I think this procedure usually is done in the OR, but we opted to try and get it out in his office, and I am glad we did. It was weird however, the shots for numbing my foot were not fun, lots of yanking, pulling, and unscrewing, and I chose not to watch.
Best of luck to you, I am sure you will also be just fine!
Best, Sue

Heh, that's a similar exercise routine as what I was planning on doing and have done in the past, except that I'd only play tennis 3 times a week. I'm having trouble understanding how a screw is only "shifted." Anyway, I'm still in the early stages of recovery, so I won't worry about it too much for now. :) I would have also chosen not to watch a procedure like that--I faint at such things. :)

Thanks for your response,

Carlos

I had 5 screws and 5 pins in my right foot after surgery on September 15, 2003. Two of the pins were removed approximately 7 weeks after surgery. That was done in the office and was completely painless. One of the screws started to come out. I could see the bump under my skin. Actually the doctor told me that it wasn't coming out but that the swelling went down more than he anticipated. I had it taken out when I had bunion surgery on my left foot. The screw removal is NO big deal. I think they made a 1/4" incision and I got 2 or 3 stitches. Some doctors can do it in the office although my doctor doesn't. If I was only having the screw removed my doctor said I would not have to get the pre-surgery physical. I think they remove the screw with a shot of novacaine. Good luck!

Hi supermom802,
Wow you had a lot done to your foot, hope it is healing nicely. Although I personally wouldn't say that having the screw out is no big deal, at least to me it wasn't. After 3 shots in my foot of local ans..he and another dr. went to work to get the screw out. I found it all a bit scarey, and unnerving actually, but am glad it is over. I can see why most Dr.'s do it in the OR. But you are right, I avoided all the pre-surgery stuff and am happy about that. Stitches come out Tuesday, and today my foot is not too sore.
Best of luck to you, hope you heal quickly.
Best, Sue

Ok, I just got off the phone with my doctor and I was talking with him about the way my feet have been feeling, and he thinks that I may need to have my screws taken out. NOW I AM TOTALLY FREAKING! I was wondering what kind of problems you have been having.....My feet are still tender and achy, and the doctor told me that that isn't normal. He said that I should be 100% by now. I still have quite a bit of swelling and I can't fit into any of my shoes yet. What all was going on with your foot that indicated that you needed to have your screws removed? How long ago did you say your surgery was? Please let me know how it goes tomorrow!! Good Luck! Mandy

Rileyroe,

I am suprised that a doctor could tell that your screws need to be removed via a phone conversation. Did he have x-rays to look at? My surgeon is known for exhausting every option before performing surgery. I could see the bump under my skin that was a screw head. My surgeon said it had to come out. It stuck out at least 1/4". My surgery was in September on that foot. I still think that it is no big deal tohave a screw removed. When was your surgery? My latest surgery was in February. I had swelling from my last surgery for about 4 months. Good luck!

Hi Supermom802,
Well you are a tougher woman than I, really a superwoman!
I thought it was much harder emotionally speaking, having the screw out in the dr.'s office, than my toe fusion last year with IV sedation in the OR.
I am impressed, and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

He didn't say that they for sure had to be removed, but offered this as a possibility for the tenderness that I still have. It has been almost 2 months ago that I had my double bunionectomy. He said that by now, my feet should not be as tender as they are. He said it is a possibiltiy that my body is just not handling having the hardware in there....they could still be in perfect position. Who knows, hopefully I will start feeling better and none of this will even need to be figured out!

Hi Mandy,
It's a day after having my 2 screws out and I'm feeling pretty good. They gave me a couple of shots in my foot before the surgery. After trying to locate the screws and poking around a bit, he just unscrewed them, stitched and bandaged me up.Gave me some juice and sent me on my way. It really wasn't all that bad. Although I think I would have rather been knocked out.The reason that I had to have them removed was because....I could feel them on the bottom of my foot when I walked. It felt like I was walking on a marble.OUCH The Doctor asked me yesterday if I could still feel the (marble).Duh..my foot was numb and couldn't feel anything. My original surgery was in late November of last year.I had only one foot done.My left foot needs to be done soon, but I don't know when I will be ready to go through this again. It is getting really bad. I think it is because I have been favoring my right foot.At least when I have my left foot done I should be driving sooner than I was with my right foot done. With just having my screws out I can't drive again for 2 weeks GRRRR and can't go back to work for at least 2 weeks.I don't know about your Doctor, but my Doctor originally had said that my foot would not be back to 100% for a long time(several months).I hope this info. helps you out a little.I hope you are feeling better soon!

Hi Susie-
I am glad things went ok for you!! You have to be relieved that is it behind you!! How bad is the pain now? Are you having to take any pain medicine?
Was your foot real achy? I can't pinpoint where it hurts, (it is right around the ball of my foot) it just hurts! At times I can't put all of my weight on either foot.....i am so ready for my feet to feel better! I am scared to death that the screws are what is causing the pain and that I am going to have to have them removed! I can't imagine sitting there while he takes 2 screws out of each foot!! I'll need something to relax me!!!!!!!!!!!! How bad were the shots when he numbed you, and how big are the incisions? I guess you can't get them wet for another couple weeks again huh?? What a PAIN!!! Take care, and I will talk to you soon! Mandy

HI Mandy ,
Yes, I'm glad that it is behind me! Now all I have to do is look forward to having my left foot done  The pain isn't too bad today.Tuesday night and yesterday it was very sore. I did take some Darvaset(sp). But nothing now.My foot also hurt on the bottom, right at the base of the ball of my foot. You could actually feel the little bump, although it felt like a huge bump on the inside. Before I had them removed the Doctor put little inserts around the bumps to relieve the pressure and he also gave me a cortisone shot, but none of them worked.I was surprised at the size of the screws. I thought they were smaller than they actually were.If you do have to have them removed see if they will give you general not local. To me it was a nightmare. The shots :( and the poking and pulling :( I don't know how big the incision is but there are 3 stitches that have to be removed in 2 weeks.I have a Doctor appointment tomorrow to have the dressing changed and I will be able to see the incision.Yea, it stinks especially since it is my right foot and I can't even drive again for 2 weeks YIPEE. No driving with the surgical shoe. As far as getting it wet I had bought a Seal-Tight bandage protector. It is great, I take a shower everyday and not a drop of water gets on the foot. Keep in touch and I will talk to you soon,
Susie

Hi Susie,
I agree with you..wasn't that a nightmare??..the shots and the poking, pulling etc. Glad to know someone else was emotionally freaked out by the whole thing. I didn't even look to see how big the screw was, I hid behind a mag. the entire time! Just was really glad when it was over. Heal quickly..

HI Sue,

Thanks for the reply. My brother is 61 and has had alot of surgeries in his life including a couple of operations on his heart. He had bunion surgery about 4 weeks ago and just had his one screw out and another put in.He also said there is no way in He-- he would ever do that again under local. He said, that was the worst thing he has been through.Just some FYI... well, i am scared to death now!! i really hope that isn't what the problem is!!the doctor said he wanted to wait a couple weeks and see what happens, so i guess time will tell! he also told me that he has never done the removal at the hosppital, but he would if i wanted him too. go figure, leave it to me to be the first one that has to have it done at the hospital! he will just have to realize that it is both of my feet...not just one!! take care to both of you! rileyroe,

Well, that sounds like a real double-bind, doesn't it? You either get to go through this awake with a local (and suffer a procedure that's said to be worse than heart surgery) or be the first your doctor's done under IV sedation. Talk about a no-win situation. If I can vote here, I'd agree with your decision and vote for the latter. Too bad if your doctor hasn't done them in-hospital. How much different could it be from the preparation for a bunionectomy? It will likely be quick, cleaner (which is important when, let's face it, your're talking about making any size opening in the body) and much easier on you. And as you said, it IS both feet. I say stand your ground (no pun intended) and tell him you'd rather not be awake, thanks. If I ever have to have mine removed, that's what I'll do.

well, i think i will tell him that i want it done at the hospital if i do end up having to have it done. i just really wonder if it isn't healed yet, or if it is the screws causing the pain. he told me that by now (2 months) i should be at almost 100%. This seems different from what everyone elses doctors has told them so I am confused! Although he did have me in tennis shoes by three weeks after, and I was always able to bear weight, as soon as i could stand too anyway. I am not sure what type of precedure he did....i think it was an austin bunionectomy. it is amazing how different doctors have different orders. who knows, but now i am even more confused! mandy

Mandy, just like anything else I guess, everyone has their own opinion.Just hope and pray that it's not the screws.Maybe your Doctor pushed you a bit because you had both feet done and he knew you needed to get around somehow...?????? I was not into a sneaker until about 6 weeks. I go back to the Doctors today to have my bandages changed.I don't know what I did or if it is expected but my incision is bleeding alot.Hopefully it is ok. I need to get back to work.If you don't mind me asking, how old are you? I'm 43 and a single Mom of 3.Just keep your hopes up( not the screws) :) Susie

rileyroe,

I confess it occurred to me that your doctor may just be expecting more healing than your feet are capable of at this point. As I've said in previous posts, I'm a little over 3 months and I'm not 100% yet--and my orthopedic surgeon is quite happy with my progress. In fact, he's discharged me from on-going care and said I don't need to come back until I'm ready to have my other foot done in 3 more months. Another thought: could your doctor be trying to respond to what he perceives as an abnormal amount of discomfort (based on your reports) at this stage? It seems to me the x-rays would be invaluable in determining whether the screws need to come out. What do they say? If I could avoid it, I wouldn't have my screw(s) removed at all. I could be wrong, but if you can strip out a screw hole in a piece of wood by overworking it, couldn't you do the same thing with bone? Maybe you could ask what the conservative treatment would be (like waiting a month to see what happens), and whether there is any down side to it. Just a few thoughts.

I haven't had my surgery yet (7/23) but my ortho is using 2 dissolvable screws. Any body else have these? Yikes, what if they decide to move around b4 they are completly dissolved & there is not enough screw left to get the problem pcs. out.

I agree with both of you , I really wonder if I am progressing just fine since I did have them BOTH done. He told me that he dosen't do both at the same time very often.....so maybe he just dosen't realize the healing time for both feet. I am definately not going to rush this. He wants me to let him know if they are not getting any better in another week. I hope they do start feeling better. And, no I don't mind you asking....I just turned 29 on Monday. Hi,
My appointment went ok. He said the bleeding was from when he did the surgery. He also said I must have got it a little wet. When the brown blood gets wet it turnds red????????????That's why I thought it kept bleeding. He said it looks great.I'm still in this ugly blue shoe.LOL and no driving at least until I get the stitches out on the 16th.Then I should be able to start wearing a regular shoe.Hopefully he will release me to go back to work.I'm going to see if I can can be released on light duty,if I have to wear the blue shoe at all. I work for a supermarket chain and we have to wear a solid shoe.Who knows.... I need to get back to work! I posted another thread about a 2nd surgery.Take a look.... :) Hope you're feeling better.Have a great weekend and keep in touch,

Let me know what you decide about your second surgery...I would get it over with if I were you, that way it dosen't keep getting worse!! Hi Susie!

I am doing ok, my feet are still pretty sore, although I have a day here and there when they feel ok. i am just buying my time, and hoping they start feeling ok! My doctor told me to give it until this coming Monday, and he said we will figure out what to do then. WHO KNOWS!!

How are you feeling? Are you getting around pretty good? How long did the pain last after you had the screws removed? How many incisions do you have, and how big are they? Sorry about all the questions! Take care, and let me know how you've been!

How are you feeling? Are you getting around pretty good? How long did the pain last after you had the screws removed? How many incisions do you have, and how big are they? Sorry about all the questions! Take care, and let me know how you've been!

Mandy
Well, nice to hear from you.Are you working? I'm doing pretty good.Still in the big blue shoe.I called the Doctor today and he said he put return to work on the 16th on my disability form.I also have my stitches out that day and will finally be able to wear a regular shoe and drive. The pain was only bad the night of surgery and part of the next day.I have my moments also, some good moments some bad.I only have 3 stitches and I peeked under the dressing. It doesn't look to bad. I think the incision is about 3/4 in or so.

Yah, I have been working. I am able to wear my flip flops, so that helps out alot. Thank god I can wear them! I am glad to know that the incision isn't too big. I think I would have to have two incisions in each foot though, because there are two screws in each foot. I am going to do everything in my power to not have to have them taken out!! I am glad you are feeling ok....I am kinda surprised you aren't able to work. I really hope I won't need to miss alot of work if I do have the screws taken out! And the thought of the blue shoes again..................YUCK! Take care! Mandy

I think the main reason I'm not working is that I work for a supermarket chain and I work on the sales floor stocking shelves, alot of squating and bending my foot.I also have to wear a full supportive shoe. That blue shoe??? I don't think so.LOL Susie

I can't even imagine squating and moving around like that!! No wonder you aren't able to go back to work! I sit at a desk all day, and have a footstool I can put my feet on if i need too. I hope you heal well!!

I had two screws which were removed after I came out of my walking boot -- 13 weeks post-op. They gave me Versed, which means that I was technically awake, but I don't remember most of what went on during the screw removal, which took about 30 minutes. The incisions from the screw removal hurt for a few days, but then that went away. I use Mederma on all of my foot scars -- it not only helps make the scars less visible, but also helps break up any scar tissue under the incisions.

I have 2 screws in my big toe and 1 in the last toe. One in my big toe is backing out. I can feel it on the top of my foot. Dr says he will remove it when I have my other foot done or if it really bothers me he will do before that. I will try to wait until next foot is done. I have had novacaine in my foot before. It is not pleasant but it is tolerable. I had a beauty mark that was in between my toe removed and had to have a skin graph taken from the top of my foot.
