Hi: I have had asthma for many years and up until last November it was under good control with Azmacort and Ventolin inhaler. During the last several months the Azmacort stopped working. My pulmonologist prescribed Seravent and Singular; the catch is that I am very afraid of new medications as I sometimes get dizzy and am afraid new meds will make me dizzy or worse. I have read the Seravent can cause paradoxical irreversible bronchospasm and while it doesn't happen to everyone, if it happens to you, you can die from inability to breathe. I am thinking of trying Singular pills, perhaps I will take a half and see what happens- I would like to know your experiences with Singular. I think my asthma is worse lately because of allergies and I have alot of crap in my lungs which is audible when I try to clear my lungs by coughing.

I take serevent and singular. Singular was just added in febuary. It has helped a lot.The phlem will no longer stay down in your lungs it adds something that makes it easier to get up. some mornings after i take it i spend a part of the morning coughing with phlem in my throat but I always think its better than keeping this crapp down in my lungs causing damage. other days I don't have any phelm. But my chest feels looser.Do you use a rescue inhaler? Servbent is just like a rescue inhaler only it lasts 12 hours so your lung passageways stay dialated longer so it is also easier than to breath.I think serevent generally is pretty harmless.

I do use my rescue inhaler- I try to limit my intake to 6 puffs per day but lately I am getting worse; I probably will have to go to oral prednisone; I am going to see a new pulmonologist in October; I am thinking of trying the Sinugular; it is nice that it helps you; I sure could use something that loosened the crap in my lungs.

Hi,
I use Azmacort and Serevent. They have made an enormous difference for me. I don't use the Serevent much, just when it's really bad, and maintenance of about once a day. The Azmacort I use about 4 times a day.
Singulair I just started taking also, a few days ago. My chronic coughing is letting up quite a bit.
No bad side effects here (so far.)
Take care now.
Sincerely,
Caring

Does your doctor know you'r just using servent occasionally? Servent is not a rescue inhaler it won't help you if your using it occasionally. for those of us whose lungs are being damaged by asthma the thought is serevent provides long term dialation of the lungs, thus less trapping of air, trying to avoid attacks of wheezing but it won't do anything for you if your actually feeling short of breath. use your rescue inhaler for that.

Thank you for you concern. I have Albuterol, Atrovent, and was just prescribed another emergency inhaler when I'm too sensitive to take Albuterol. Starts with a "P" but I can't remember the name off hand.
When I was saying I use Serevent when my breathing gets bad, I didn't mean as an emergency inhaler, I meant when my coughing asthma gets really bad, or if I have frequent episodes of breathing problems throughout a day or a few weeks. Especially after having a bout of Bronchitis or something where my lungs are really working poorly.
Thank you though for looking out for me.
You all take care now.

i am sorry i thought you were using it when you were actually having trouble. I worry about someone thinking the servent will help them when they are actually having trouble. I think sometimes all these medications can be confusing. people don't understand they can die from a severe asthma attack.Once I waited because i was wheezing I thought it was my cold, but my lungs were shutting down by time I got to the er I was hardly moving air.Boy will I never be that stupid again!!!

No, you don't need to apologise. We all need to look out for one another and help each other out the best we can. I appreciate your concern. Thank you.
By the way, I looked up more information about Serevent. Wow, talk about your side effects. I never even realized Serevent was THAT strong. Anyone who is using Serevent really should read up on the side effects, regularly, not just once or twice. There's so many, you might be having some and not even remember they are side effects.
On the flip side, Singulair seems to be helping a lot, and from what I read, has very few side effects. This is encouraging, considering all the other asthma medications can have some really bad side effects.
You all take care now.

Side Effects of Serevent according to their own literature:
Well there's too many to list them all, but here are the more common ones, at the recommended dose of two puffs twice a day. Occurance is still low in the following side effects:
Upper respiratory tract infection.
Nasopharyngitis.
Disease of the nasal cavity/sinus headache.
Sinus Headache.
Stomachache.
Headache.
Tremor.
Cough.
Lower respiratory infection.
Sore Throat.
Diarrhea.
Back Pain.
Chest Congestion.
There is an emphasis that overdosage is serious! You should not use Serevent more than twice a day, two puffs each, 12 hours apart, with NO doubling up if you miss a dose.
Hope this will be of help.
Take Care now.

Hi..I've never posted on this board. I have severe sinus problems (which seem to be, after 15 years, finally coming under some kind of control!! Had my first ever infection-free xray Monday! yay me!!!)and was just told (on the same day of the xray)that I'm well on my way to asthma. I think I have few and far-between 'bouts' of it as it is. But my ENT put me on singulair about 1.5 years ago because it's supposed to also have positive effects on sinuses and also I guess he knew I was a good candidate for asthma. So I read up on the side effects and the one that stuck out to me was heartburn/indegestion. SO...after that long introduction..I wanted to throw that out because I seem to be reading alot about a connection between asthma and heartburn/that nasty regurgitating thing. Could be the singulair for the people who are taking it?
Well, I don't actually know much but am planning on hanging around some asthma message boards. The fat man who sits on my chest in the mornings and squeezes my lungs every few months for a few weeks told me to... :)
