Hello everyone-I'm hoping i can get some help-I had a chevron bunionectomy 2/23-they used an ankle block-very nice!! (crossover deformity on right foot) no major pain problems with the foot. Has me wondering if I'm nuts-I'm walking! I have been since the afternoon I had it done-scared to try to drive yet. Only had some pain the first night. Was taking vicodin but had a lot of itching and acid reflux so now I'm on Darvocet-may stop because I don't seem to need it.
Started on keflex because the doctor took a look yesterday and incision was looking red.
Anyway-I've had some drainage-called Dr's nurse who said it was okay to change the dressing-now I'm going to embarrass myself-I can't figure out how they anchored the wrap to the heel and big toe! Any nurses out there? It's really bad because I'm a homehealth aide! I was looking for a website that has diagrams of bandages-but found you guys!
From the scary stories here I'm worried now that I'm walking too much (good thing I didn't read these BEFORE surgery!)-I have the cute little boot on, and walk on my heel (R)-I have crutches but- we have a lot of ice at the moment, I feel safer w/o them. I try to remember to use them.
Is there anyone out there who knows how to wrap feet? I have kerlix, micropore tape, 4x4s...Thanks! Allisonthezookeeper

first of all I'm amazed that you could walk the day of the procedure of a chevron - I'm assuming the anesthetic has completely worn off and you have fairly normal sensation in your foot, or maybe you've been taking the pain meds on a regular schedule before you can experience any pain? or maybe you don't have a lot of swelling? you're a podiatric miracle

what I can remember of the bandaging -
1. 4x 4 goes over the incision and may be taped in place or held by fingers and secured by kerlex (in next step)
you didn't mention a pin sticking out so that is something else to be wrapped up (carefully as it really is SOOO uncomfortable)
2. then put a rolled up small 2x2 bandage (or cotton balls) between your big and 2nd toe and wrap kerlex around the front part of the foot over the 4x4 over the incision and around the material spacing your toe out so it is secure (also around the ankle a couple of times for more secure fit)
3. ace bandage goes over the front part of the foot and around the ankle and secured
then, it's okay to be a little tight as it is to compress the foot a bit to decrease the swelling
I really didn't like it so tight so I had my ace very loose and had persistent bad swelling for a long time, and that improved almost right away after I started wrapping my foot tighter

Good luck, don't worry so much, it's not rocket science, you'll do the bandage fine

Well, they didn't put a pin in-so that's not an issue. I think maybe my foot wasn't as deformed as some even though it sure looked it!
I had very little swelling-the big toe looks a little bruised though.
I stopped pain meds Thursday-didn't seem to need them and the acid reflux was still bad. I even stopped Bextra and the other vitamins, etc. that I take normally.
I got some narrower gauze-that was the whole problem! DUH!
I am able to get around pretty well, am a little afraid :nono: I shouldn't be doing this much-but at worst the joint gets a little achey and itchy. I've been driving some-I just use the mid-foot. Thanks for the help! Allison
