Let me give you a little history.

When I was first diagnosed with asthma, I was in the trauma unit in a small hospital in a small town where I used to live. They literally saved my life  Before I went to the er I was taking suafed for my sinus congestion. I developed a cough, and the pharmaurist(SP) I had just moved there and didn't have a doctor.) They told me that I could take sudafed with cough syrup if I spaced the dosage. At any rate I ended up in the er with my lungs so full of Mucus thatI was moments away from dying  Now my doctor would really like to give me Sudafed(for my yr round hayfever) and the sinus infections I get. I'm so afraid of having another episode like that again. I don't know if I have an allergy to some ingredient in Sudafed .(I now take entex) Is there a way to tell? Has anyone had a reaction to Sudfed? If so what did your dr. reccomend to use, that I might pass along to my own doctor? She told me to do my research and come back with some ideas and we can figure out the best course of treatment together.

I had a reaction once, but I have random weird allergies that come and go like that. It made the congestion so severe, I was crying=(.
But I take Clarinex daily year round 4 allergies, why don't you take an antihistamine? Or even one with a decongestant, such as Allegra-D?
I only take Sudafed in severe situations, b/c I am already on Flonase and Clarinex, that really takes care of the problem. You could also ask about a nasal steroid spray such as Flonase!

I don't take Sudafed for anything anymore. I used to take it as a 'quick fix' for my eczema instead of using the cream. But I found that each time I took Sudafed I got a pretty bad asthma attack within minutes. The same thing happens with guaifenesin.

My dr told me not to take Sudafed, unless I was desperate. He gave me Allegra. He said a straight antihisthamine was much better. I also have Rhinocort nasal spray. Have you tried nasal irrigation? I do this twice a day and it helps.

I'm confused..why would you use Sudafed for eczema??
I've never heard of that! I've had severe eczema since I was born and I don't think i've ever heard of or tried that..

I'm going to tell my doctor I should be on an antihistime like allegra or clairnex. Again thank you all for your responses I'll let you know how it goes during my next visit(In april.) In the meantimeI continue with my Flonase.

I carried Sudafed around all the time when I was outside since sun triggered it. I figured that it's an antihistamine and should stop the horrible itching. Benadryl would have the same effect, I think.

The sun triggered your eczema? Do you know why or how?
I'm asking b/c I had an incident last summer in Cancun with an uncontrollable outbreak of hives/eczema every single day. I THINK it was the chlorine in the pool(it had extremely high levels of chlorine) or else the sun, b/c it's very very strong there..much stronger than what i'm used to here in the weak Illinois sun.
Benadryl does have the same effects, i'm told to "double up" on my antihistamine dosage~Clarinex AND Benadryl, when i'm not doing well or having hives/eczema problems, it really does help.

Depends..if it is allergy induced, then yes. I have found Clarinex does an EXCELLENT job of controlling ALL my skin allergies(eczema-allergic, psoriasis, hives, seborrheic dermatitis), b/c they are all triggered by something(s) (though I don't know all of them). Usually during the winter I have several severe episodes of skin allergy problems but this winter has been the best yet..only 2 episodes that I can think of, both were easily treated with Cutivate.

Hi Pink B - I am curious, what does the eczema feel like? I don't have it, but my 2 year old has it. He is constantly scratching himself to the point of bleeding and his skin is really rough. I have some steroid creams to put on him, but he says they hurt. What type of creams do you use, if any?

What does the skin feel like or the actual condition? Well..i'll say it is horribly embarassing, kids used to make fun of me in school..spread rumors like I had AIDS..=( But it's hard to stop itching, it itches..then especially as a child you see the skin peeling(sorry this is gonna get graphic lol) and its just like ..peel it! Its almost like a fascination cuz your young and your just like what is goin on..so you peel the peeling skin off and then you regret it cuz it gets all oozy and weepy and then it just crusts up again. Sometimes it will bleed. It hurts, its like that burning, itchy, scratchy owchie feeling..and you just want to like pull your skin off your so frustrated.
Creams that I use..we have a pharmacy in my house for skin creams!(it runs in the family, we're all affected..we make family trips to the derm lol) I start at Cortaid(OTC) which is relatively low dose for a rash. If that doesn't help, I move up to Cutivate(by prescription) which is a moderate dose of cortisone. If that doesn't help, I use Psorcon(very, very high dose of steroid). I also double up my antihistamines and use plenty of lotion. Make sure you are using a sensitive skin lotion..and plenty of it! I highly recommend Cetaphil, it comes very highly recommended by all drs I know. It is perfect for eczema ridden skin. Do you know what triggers it? I would suggest allergy proofing his room and whatever you can in the house, it will benefit you also! Hardwood floors we got in 2 years ago made a HUGE difference! But yeah about the creams..usually the creams feel good, but I know some of the topical oils sting like nothing else my god..I remember screaming from them when i'd have 2 use them..but all of those that I can think of are for the scalp. The creams should feel good though. Never had a problem with the creams.
so if you have anymore questions about eczema go ahead and feel free to ask away, i'm a living walking book on eczema lol..

I was never 100% sure that my eczema was triggered by the sun. But it always seemed that way. Sometimes I put suntan lotion on the places where my eczema flared up the most and that seemed to help a little.
