I quit smoking on Jan 4, 2004. After wearing a patch for three weeks, I went nicotine free and went through the normal problems. Now that 8 weeks have passed, I am concerned about my lack of concentration and what seems to be a very poor short-term memory. I am also not as articulate as I was. I will add that I had major surgery on the 4th and was under for 2.5 hours. Anyone else have these issues for 8 weeks or more and if so, how much longer?
Thanks

I have heard some people say they have trouble concentrating after they quit smoking, but I would think in time it would improve. But I've also heard of people having problems with their memory after being under anesthesia for surgery. Maybe you should discuss this with your Dr. And congratulations on your quit too.
Possibly you'll hear from another person on board who's been through this.
Good luck,
DEDA

I agree with Deda - my memory has always been bad - even while smoking. LOL
I would see your doctor about this and also keep a log of forgotten memories. They'll be asking you how you can tell, etc...
Keep the quit :)

I think nicotine does affect memory. It seems to me that they were doing a trial on alzheimer's patients. Your doctor might have some suggestions for you, maybe that ginko stuff would help. Time takes care of some of it too. Also, if you are like me, check your blood pressure. That sure made me feel like I was in a fog!

Hypothyroid really does a number on your memory too...

Hey guilty - I would take the ginko if I could remember to take it. LOL :bouncing:

I stopped sleeping well when I quit smoking--that definately affected my memory and concentration. I quit with Zyban (Wellbutrin), my problems started when I stopped. So I went back to the wellbutrin--helped with my mood--guess I had some problems with depression that I masked with nicotine.
I also recently had surgery-the pain meds made my brain fuzzy. It was about six weeks before I really got back to reading, concentration, etc. But evenutally I was fine.
I would check with your doc. The combo of surgery & smoking is probably just a little overhwelming for your body.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

That would be funny if it wasn't so true!!! I have so many supplements lying around I could start my own business! I bet sleep does have something to do with it too.
I had quit for six weeks last May to have liposuction, but started again shortly after the surgery because I felt so tired and out of it (stupid excuse, I know). So after your surgery, be aware that it takes time to get back to "normal" and stay quit, why not? It's a lot easier.
Gosh, if I could just have lipo every three months or so, that would keep me quit, LOL!!! Then when the fat runs out, we'll go to lifting things! (this is probably why God doesn't let me win the lottery!)
