I am not sure what to make of this. My middle child, she is 8, has just been diaignosed as having no short term rote sequential memory. I thought she may be dyslic? Has anyone else heard of this learning disorder? I am just so confused by it all. I am told she will never be able to memorize a phone number but she seems to remember things she wants to.

It's part of dyslexia my son now 12 has a terriable time with math/reading/spelling can only learn about 10 words a month. He has severe dyslexia,receptive/expressive language, short term memory,hand writing,sometimes repeats words,eye-tracking problems,central auditory processing disorder,turns letters and numbers backwards. I had him tested at a major university that specialises in learning disorders. They said he would never be a good speller.

It depends if this is auditory or visual. Can she remember something if you write it down or pair it with a picture? Sometimes this helps, and she will then learn to associate the picture to the numbers over time. Also, have her trace over numbers with her fingers and say them aloud. Sometimes we just need to use other modalities in order to compensate what we lack. This may help her.

'to compensate what we lack' doesn't fix the problem, it just helps you to try to live with it. If one strengthens their weak areas, like one would strengthen a muscle,they wouldn't have the weakness... after all the brain is a muscle...read about the arrowsmith school program, do a search I'm sure it will help.

At the moment my daughter is going to a different school in the mornings called the Dionostic Learning Centre that the scool division here has and she is really enjoying it. I have checked out that school the Arrowsmith one and its in Ontario, which is to bad as we live in Manitoba and do not plan on moving. But I would like to thank all of you who have replied, as it has given somemore insight to what this learning thing is all about.
