My Mom, My Aunt(Mom's Sister) and my Sister have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. What are the chances of me developing this? What are some of the early warning signs? Should I let my Dr. know? Should I be tested regularly? I know I'm asking a lot of questions but any info will help.
Thanks

hello,
i have a mother with fibromyalgia, and auto-immune disorders run in my family (i believe that, in some circles, fibro is considered auto-immune).
i wouldn't worry about it too much, but acquaint yourself with the symptoms. my mom had been telling me for years that she thought i had it, but it never really posed a problem for me until i had my first "flare" a few weeks ago, and was subsequently diagnosed.
i don't think there's any reason to be checked regularly, but that's just me. if you don't have pain or fatigue that gets in the way of normal functioning, i'd just try to stay as healthy as possible (exercise and proper diet go a lonnnng way, i've found out in the past two weeks).
good luck to you! :)

I don't know, but it would seem like it. My dad has 6 sisters, and so far 2 of them have been diagnosed. One of the sisters has 3 children (2 boys, 1 girl) all of whom have been diagnosed. Another of my dad's sisters (who has not been diagnosed) has a daughter who has been as well. My sister and I are both suffering from some very bizarre symptoms, but neither of us have yet to be diagnosed (the doctor everyone else is going to requires $400 to run tests for the diagnosis).
(My sister and I are concerned we may either have this OR MS, as our mom has MS).
SO it seems like FM can infact be hereditary?

hey there- yes fibromyalgia is hereditary but it takes something to trigger it. like for my mom it was her car accident a few years ago she had broken her arm, for me it was when i was horseback riding and my horse spazzed out when a tractor went by and when i had fallen i was like knocked out for a minute or so cuz of how hard i hit the ground and thats what trigger it for me..My aunt and my grandmother both have it too but i dont remember what caused it...You prolly shouldnt worry too much cuz like i said it takes something to trigger it but you can always ask your Dr. questions or anything about it just in case...your chances are pretty high of getting it but dont worry too much just yet..hope this helps! take care!-michelle

I'm concerned by your statement regarding a doctor charging $400 to run tests to diagnose fibro. There are no tests to diagnose fibro, it is a clinical diagnosis, specifically based on trigger points and symptoms. Please be careful not to be taken advantage of and paying for tests that aren't needed.

I'm not going to pay $400, but apparently the doctor my relatives are going to are being charged this much to be seen by him . He's in CA as far as I know, and like you said, diagnoses based on the trigger points. I'm not sure why he charges that much- probably because he's a specialist? I have no clue.. in any case, I can't afford his help. LOL
