Man, today was my first day without a cigarette. This is horrible to go through this part. I started crying at work today uncontrollably. It was so embarrassing. I am actually feeling pretty good about it now, but the problem is......is that I constantly think about smoking. I mean, non stop! I want to read about it, I want to talk about it, it's like the thoughts will just not go away. I know the next two days will probably be as rough. I constantly hear a voice in my head that says "Get a cigarette" Then another voice comes in and says "Ok, oh, Wait! No, you quit!"
I just wish someone I worked with, would quit smoking so I could talk with someone through this. One of my coworkers says they are going to quit on May 1st, but I didn't want to wait that long.
To make matters worse, I felt compelled to discuss with all my smoker friends, why they should quit. I turned into that person that drove me nuts when I was a smoker! Here I haven't quit smoking for a full 24 hrs yet and I am giving lectures! Anyone else go through this? God, what is wrong with me. I am not going to have any friends by the time this is all done with.

Yes, I'm quitting now. This makes my 13th day that I haven't used tobacco. The crying and obsessive thoughts that you're having are all normal and are part of the healing process. They will soon pass, so hang in there. Having someone to talk to or that can relate to is very important. That's why these boards are so great. It's full of people just like you.
Best of luck to you, Kelly

Yes Kelly we've all been there done that. LOL It doesn't bother me that I was a Kelly before because my motto was "whatever it takes" to quit smoking - so be it.
I'm sure your friends and other smokers (if they've tried to quit before) or exsmokers know what you're going through. It really does consume your thoughts for the first week or so. Just hang in there - it'll get better.
Don't forget why it is that you felt so strongly about quitting - it's important that you write it down and keep it with you. Think of your skin and health. That in itself should make it easier for you. Who wants bad skin, teeth, or health?
It's really hard to not be a promoter of stopping smoking once you stop because the benefits sooooo outway smoking so when you care about people - you want them to reap the same benefits or at least not die from it.
Always remember that it's not the unsociable part to think of - it really can kill you - that is why we all quit!
Stay strong and my prayers are with you - keep coming out here - we'll support you and also read all the threads/archives - they should help you alot.
Great job Kelly :) :bouncing:

Well, I made it through another day. Day 2! I thought I was going to give in to smoking today. I had the voice say "get a cigarette" and I thought for about 2 minutes. Why am I doing this to myself? Just smoke a cigarette and be happy instead of going through all this torture. Then one of my co workers who smokes walked by me right at that second and his cigarette literally made my stomach upset. So I snapped myself out of those thoughts of giving in and pulled through another day. I can't wait for it to get easier. It will probably be ok after a week or so. I hope! It's funny that I can't stand cigarette smoke now. I got one of my coworkers to attempt to quit smoking, he's cut back......we all know how that goes though. I got another girl at work to start thinking about it. Oh well. I am just needing to vent. I feel like a space case on this Zyban.

Way to go Sixx! Just keep shutting up that silly little voice in your head every time you hear it, okay? Hey, sounds like your going to start an anti smoking revoulution over there at your job..right on. I know I've tried to get some people to quit too, why not? It seems to help your own quit in some way.
What's this about feeling like a space cadet on the Zyban? I took that for 3 weeks. It was great as far as keeping the cravings down to a minimum, and I loved that it also surpressed my appetite, which was great! But it also made me feel depressed and very teary. Not many people have that effect, but I have read of it happening to a few. You will probably be okay on it, I noticed those symptoms about a week after I started it. You are correct in that it will get easier after your 1st week is up, it definitely does. I quit 5 months ago, and out of all this time, only the 1st week was the most tortuous. I still have cravings from time to time, and sometimes think hard about having a smoke, but it's usually only when I allow myself to become very bored, or if I'm really upset (angry) about something. Fortunately, this doesn't happen often. Keep up the good job that you're doing, and look you can forward to next week when things start calming down for you, and you'll think if only I knew it wasn't so bad, I would've done this a long time ago!!! :)
Good luck,
DEDA

Hi, I know what you're going through. I quit just a few days ago myself because of my high blood pressure and thyroid problem and it's been pretty rough. I've broke down in tears for no reason and just couldn't think straight. So far, it's getting a little bit better, but I still get depressed when I think of smoking. Good luck to you and I hope things get better for you :)

Hi Stormy78--
Congratulations on quitting the smokes. I quit in Sept. after 30 years of it, quitting off and on over those years. I was dx'd with Hashi's/hypo last July and that was also a big reason I quit. It's known to raise antibodies, and works against your thyroid, even in healthy people. It was difficult quitting smoking and trying to get my levels regulated at the same time...pain, severe fatique, insomnia, etc, and dying for cigs! LOL! It's all better now though, thankfully. Makes you appreciate the good times all the more! So when did you quit Stormy?
Good luck,
DEDA :p

Hi.. I know I relapsed after a year... but I still wanted to give a little bit of my story. First it was easier for me to quit after a long night of sleep without cigarettes. The next morning would be my start into non smoking. Next is that I really wanted to quit because cigarettes were controlling my life and I didn't want to live that lifestyle anymore. The hardest part was imagining never smoking again. You could do anything you want to. I never even kept track on how long I was off of cigarettes. All I know is that it was about a year or over that amount of time. I've been on and off cigarettes for probably 5 years. I don't ever believe I was off for a year before this last time though but I know I could have probably stayed off forever if I had my head on straight. Also it is easier to quit when you are on an exercise program. That helps minimize the stress. Lastly I started to associate smoking with death, poor health, etc which made it easier to stay off. I became a health freak where vitamins etc are concerned. I kept busy and was able to quit for that amount of time. My problem for going back to the habit was a poor way in my life of dealing with stress/depression etc. I thought smoking would make me feel better. It's bad to try to self-medicate. I'm not on an exercise program anymore and really maybe it would have helped staying off. I really don't know. But when I went back to smoking a few days ago, it wasn't about feeling I needed a cigarette, it was in hopes that it would minimize the negative mental state I have been in lately.
Good luck and you could do it.
Plus I also started breaking out since I began smoking... your skin is so much better when you don't smoke.. plus even my breathing was better when I was a non-smoker... plus your body heals so much better and quicker when you are off cigarettes whether it be from wounds or to something as significant as a surgery...
good luck again!

Hi Deda-
I quit just this past monday after I was released from the emergency room. It was a BIG wake up call for me to stop. I think it was one of the reasons my BP was up so high. I smoked pretty much one right after another. I did notice my smoking level went up over last weekend, and it may have been what caused my dizziness. All in all, I think it's the best thing to do. This will make the 5th time I've quit. First time I quit, I got pneumonia and didn't smoke for almost a year. 2nd, 3rd and 4th time I quit cause I just got tired of it. Now this. i hope now I'll be able to kick the habit for good.
When I started back those times, it had been mostly over a death in my family or just general stress factors. All together I probably quit for 2 years. I've smoked since I was 16 and even back then, it was off and on. When I turned 18, it began to accumulate since I could buy my afford my own cigarettes. Now it's just cold turkey again.

Hi Stormy--
Yes, I saw your post on TD board, and read about your trip to ER. That had to be SO frightening! I'm sure the smoking only made your BP rise higher. You are very smart to quit now while you are young. I wish I had quit at 25, I think it only gets harder the longer we have smoked. Yes, it's time Stormy...this TD affects every part of our bodies and is bad enough without us inhaling all of those toxins, and weakening an already compremised immune system. So did they put you on BP drugs? Are you feeling better now? I'm sure the quit has already helped to bring down your BP.
Way to go Stormy! :blob_fire Stick around if you need help!
Take care now,
DEDA

I'm feeling a lot better now :D They put me on Atenolol and it's taking me awhile to get used to it, but I'm so much better. Yesterday, I went for more blood tests and I'm waiting to hear from them. They said it would be in either today or tomorrow. Hoping to hear good results :) Thanks again for the reply and for the encouragement.

Glad you are feeling better! My girlfriends daughter who' also has Hashi's is taking Atenolol. (She's only 20). Is that for the high blood pressure?
Oh, another thing I wanted to tell you is, some people have to reduce their thyroid meds AFTER they quit smoking. (So says my endo). Be sure to mention to your doc that you have quit too. And good luck with your blood tests! I'm still waiting for mine to hit the magic numbers! (8 months now!) But I think I'm almost there! I hope...

Heya Deda,
Atenolol is a beta-blocker and primarily used for high blood pressure and angina. Wow only 20? That's so young. I hope her blood pressure doesn't get out of whack like mine did. I'm not on any thyroid meds yet; I'm still waiting for blood tests to come back in. I'm sure they'll be in sometime today (it's 2 am now LOL) I'm really surprised I'm not out of it right now. They did up the dosage a bit on the BP medicine, 1/2 pill twice a day now so it does make me very sleepy. Maybe I'm finally adapting to it. Hope to hear from you more. Take care!

Hey Stormy--
Wow, guess I'm not the only night owl on these boards, huh? LOL! But I'm in CA, so it's 2 hours earlier than you. I stay up late as my DH works swings, and I wait for him to get home. But that's just an excuse...I like night time. Most people know I never post on here early AM. When I get up and come to this board, everyone's already been here! LOL!
Yes, she is only 20. Her cholesterol also went way up as a result of her hypo. Amazes me that it can do that to someone so young. She, like me, has Hashi's. I didn't get any of that. She also had a lot of weight gain, but it's finally starting to go down, she's lost 20 some lbs. I was lucky in that I didn't gain from it. The smoke quit yes, but that's coming down now too. But I lost a lot of hair and suffered a lot of pain. :( My daughter is the same age as you, she'll be 26 in Oct., and I hope she doesn't get this for a long, long time. Chances are she will though, someday.
How are you doing on the smoke quit, Stormy? I know it's difficult at first, but it's so crucial now for you, especially if you are hypo. You don't need to furthur depress your already low functioning thyroid gland. Are you doing okay? Just remember that it does get easier after a little time passes along. Please let me know how your tests come out. Did they test you for anti bodies as well as the thy panel? Did you quit cold turkey?
Hang in there Stormy, life will start looking better pretty soon. Just don't smoke girlfriend!! You'll be jumping around in no time... :blob_fire

Hey Deda,
It has gotten a lot easier. I haven't even had any cravings, especially after I eat. I would normally smoke right after I ate a meal. It's been almost 2 weeks now and so far so good :) I am a night owl, but I think my medicine may be backfiring on me. Normally when I take it, I get drowsy. Now when I take it, I can't sleep at night anymore. It's weird. I am planning on talking to my doc sometime today, hopefully. Offices are always packed lol. See ya and I'll be in touch :)

Hi Deda,
I got the call about my test results today and everything turned up normal. My cholesterol is up a bit though - 207, normal is supposed to be around 200 or lower, so I gotta get that lowered. I kinda freaked out a bit, but I'm okay now. Thankfully everything else is okay though. Well, it's time for me to jet, I'll talk to yaz later and have a great weekend yourself :) :bouncing:

I agree. It may have went from 9 to 3 but I still feel tired. Not as tired as I did, but still, I am going to look into it when I have my next appointment. A dr in the ER told me that 3 is still a bit high for TSH, so I'm probably going to have to get the other things checked. I'll be in touch :)

Stormy-- :)
Nice to hear from you again.
YES! Please get it checked out again. When I started feeling sick 4 years ago, I went to my gyn, as I thought it was all perimenopause. (I knew zilch about thyroid back then). TSH was 3.6, and they said it came out normal, I believed them. Went on to feeling worse and worse for 3 more years. Had they started treatment then, I would've not gone through so much pain and misery. All that sickness made me smoke even more, not knowing what was wrong. I was a wreck. Don't give up!!
:angel:How are you doing with your non smoking??
Thanks for coming back, and keep in touch, girlfriend!

:angel:How are you doing with your non smoking??
Thanks for coming back, and keep in touch, girlfriend!
Love, DEDA :jester:
