Hello, I started taking Flax Oil and it contains 140 cal. and 14 grams of fat per teaspoon. Do you all count vitamins into your daily calorie count? Im not sure if I should reduce my calories or not to make up for the extra cal. this is giving me. Im mainly taking this for the extra fat since I know Im not getting enough.
Thanks in advance,
Heather :D

You have to remember, you will burn this fat, a lot quicker than any other fats. As far as counting the calories, it depends if you are trying to lose weight or not. Believe it or not, taking 3 tablespoons of flax oil a day will help you lose weight. How, by taking this, it speeds up your metabolism, causing you to burn more calories. I can say from my experience, I would NEVER give up taking my flax or fish oils. If you feel you are waisting empty calories, then take it early in the morning.
Just a question, why are you taking this? If you are taking it for more fat, then you may want to look ito Fish oil, rather than flax. I'm not sure if you also know this, but there are flax seeds. You can use them in anything! I put them in my protein shakes, salads, yogurts, mix fruit, etc. It just simply adds a nutty flavor. However, if you have joint pain or your skin needs to be cleared up, then I would keep taking flax oil.
Good Luck!

If you are counting calories, due to the amount of calories involved, you must include these extra calories as part of your daily intake. If it only contained a couple of calories you would not bother. Flax oil - and fish oil - provide essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids which are good fats that help raise good cholesterol and lower bad cholesterol.

Thanks everyone! Sparklebuggy, I'm taking this because I have heard that it helps with your moods, your skin, and is essuc.fat your body needs. Is fish oil better? I don't get enough fat in my diet and my skin is becoming dry and dull and I bruise very easy. I am hoping this will help.
Thanks!

If you bruise easily, then you are lacking Vitamin B. Fish oil/pills will help w/ your skin. Flax oil will not help your moods, I have never heard anything like that. If you are happy, then just stick w/ flax oil.

The high content of omega-3 fatty acids in flax seed oil are essential for the function and structure of the brain and improve cognition, memory, moods and concentration.

Is taking flax oil caplets just as good as taking the liquid kind?
How many should I take per day?

6 pills equal a tablespoon of liquid (generally, depending on the potiency). If I were you, I would take the oil. The pills are on the larger side. Also, the oil is more affect than the pills or seeds. Be sure to place them in the fridge, so they don't spoil.

it's really a matter of personal preference, as it's flax oil liquid that's in the softgel "caplets"; and the dose depends on the size of the softgel and what the bottle recommends. i prefer to buy the unprocessed seeds in bulk (much more economical!) run them through my spice mill, and sprinkle them on practically everything. i even put them in my smoothies.

Hmmm...all the research I did when I began with flax pointed me toward the higher efficacy and economic benefits of grinding my own seeds. They add a great to things, too, like sprinkled on salads. Plus, I already take so many supplements that I was thrilled with the idea of not adding more pills to swallow! Of course, everyone has to do what feels appropriate for them. The most important thing is that we make the effort to include it in our diets in whatever form, right? Anyway, I did a quick search for a link/info concerning seeds vs. oil. I hope it helps. Good luck!

I can't get the link to post properly, but this is what it says at Dr. Weil's site about it...
Dr. Andrew Weil: "...Another difference between flaxseed and flaxseed oil: the lignans in flaxseed thought to have an anti-cancer effect are not usually present in flaxseed oil. All told, my advice on flaxseed remains the same: Include a daily tablespoon or two in your diet for its health benefits. I'm not aware of any nutritional differences between gold and brown flax seeds (although it may be easier to find the brown seeds). When shopping, make sure to buy fresh seeds and consider organic varieties. Whole flax seeds are inexpensive and sold at natural food stores. Keep your supply in the refrigerator. Grind a quarter-cup or so at a time in a blender or coffee grinder that you use exclusively for this purpose. Refrigerate ground flax seeds in an airtight, opaque container, where it will keep for up to 30 days. If it smells like oil paint, it has gone bad. Throw it out."

I had a few questions also about Flax Oil. I would like to shed a few pounds also and would like to know how much anybody would suggest for me to take. I have tried taking it before but could not handle the taste of the oil so I quit. I don't want to mess with the seeds and would rather choke the oil down and I've heard the pills are a waste of time. How soon should someone expect to see some results? Are you sure this won't make me gain weight instead?

I eat a 1/2 cup of ground flax seed a day. It has been like a miracle for me, almost. I don't want to exaggerate, but i'm now off antidepressants[37 days] and anti-anxiety medication[37 days], allergy medicine[10 days] asthma medicine[10 days]. I seriously cut down on my allergy and asthma medicine on June 23. I started drinking large quantities of filtered water on July 28. That has helped my allergies and asthma, too. I was taking medication for all these conditions prior to beginning to eat the flaxmeal. I started eating the 1/2 cup of flax on June 21, 2004. I know this because i keep a journal, which I reccommend if you have any kind of health problem. By eating the 1/2 cup, I am getting approx. 1 and 1/2 tablespoons of oil. The seeds are not too much trouble. Maybe I'm weird, but it's kind of fun to grind them up each day. I advocate grinding them as you use them and not storing them. Why take a chance on them going bad, although if they do it's not like you're out a lot of money. I find the brown seeds to be just as effective as the gold. I've tried them both. In my area the brown seeds are 50 cents a pound cheaper. I grind up four tbsps of whole seeds and dump them in with my oats. I cook on medium heat for about ten minutes. With some unsulphured black strap mollasses and one percent milk, they are great. This is really the "breakfast of champions".
