For people without medical insurance, are they just a lost cause? It's a really scary thought. I'm unemployed at the moment with no insurance and to think what could happen if I were to get ill.

Just in case you don't get many replies here, there is a whole forum at HealthBoards called Health Insurance Issue...
There may be folks there who have been thru not having insurance...

Depends on where you live. Here in Chicago, we have a county hospital (as depicted in the TV show "ER") that everyone can go to if they wish. For those with insurance, they usually prefer to go elsewhere because the wait times can be in excess of 12-16 hours in the ER (obviously less for trauma and real emergencies). Similarly, the average office visit (cards, GI, etc) can take about 4-5 hours. For people without insurance, however, it is excellent healthcare at zero cost. You should check with your state/local health department to find out what options are available to you.
