Debbie,
The theory is that CoQ-10 is depleted by statins and this depletion causes/exacerbates muscle and joint pains.
I've found that my knee pain has gotten much better after the addition of the enzyme. But then, I can't assign cause and effect for sure, only a maybe but enough of a maybe I'll continue taking it.
With joint pain after Lipitor, it's worth a try! But first make sure that it's not a serious rhabdomyolysis (usually with a CPK [or CK] blood-test.)
Without any Lipitor complaints however, I wouldn't spend the money.

Although I generally agree with what zip2play said, I believe that anyone who is taking a statin should be taking coenzyme Q-10 as well. Yes, our bodies produce this crucial enzyme, the levels peaking in our twenties. Afterwards, our levels begin declining substantially with each passing decade.
From the Smart Money article, "The Lipitor Dilemma", Dr. Peter Langsjoen, a cardiologist at East Texas Medical Center, "studied 20 patients with completely normal heart function. His preliminary results showed that after six months on 20mg of Lipitor a day, two-thirds of the patients had abnormalities in the heart's filling phase, when the muscle fills with blood. His explanation: Statins can cause a dose-related depletion in an essential nutrient known as Coenzyme Q10. Without CoQ10, the cell's mitochondria can't produce energy. The shortage may cause muscle pain and weakness, but the heart is especially susceptible because it uses so much energy."

I don't know if this is coincidence or not, but I take Lipitor 20 mgs. and after the first two years on it I noticed that sometimes I got an occasional irregular heart beat (palpitations I suppose you could call it).
I started taking one daly pill of Co-Q 10 (100 mgs). After a short time on the CoQ-10, the palpitations went away.
I don't know for sure that the CoQ 10 did this, but I am not about to stop taking it at this point.

Brenda,
I think you've made a wise decision. I don't even take statins, but I still take 60mg CoQ10 each day. In fact, probably everyone over the age of forty would benefit from some supplemental CoQ10. As I said earlier, our levels do decline steadily after the age of 25 or so, and if you are taking statins, which only further depletes your already declining levels, it only makes the situation worse. What puzzles me is why so many doctors fail to recommend CoQ10 to their patients. Of course, some of them do, but there are still many other doctors who remain pretty much in the dark.
So keep on taking the 100mg CoQ10 daily. It's really not a good idea to play Russian roulette with your health, especially when it involves your heart.

CO Q-10 is excellent. I had heart problem. Dr put me on beta blockers to keep blood pressure down. I stopped them and went to a 7 flowers Chinese pill and took 300 mg of C0 Q-10 for 30 days, then dropped down to 200 for the next 30 days. Then to 100 a day ever since. The Dr did a sonagram of the heart before this and then three months later and he said my heart was 35 percent better, wall thickness returned to normal. I later did some more research and found that in University hospitals they start people out with 300 mg a day. So it does work. My wife refused any statin drugs and we went policosanol and Inositiol Hexanicotinate and 150 mg of C0 Q-10 because when you have gall stones as she had, they must stop all statin drugs immediately. Her cholesterol was 287 the statin dropped it to 213. after stopping the statin it started going back up. Then the Inositol at 1000 mg a day dropped it to 178. Statins will cause all sorts of bad stuff. Plus my wife has diabetes and that has also dropped so good that the Dr is thinking of taking her off the Glucophage. Her blood levels did not drop far until she started taking the inositol. The non flush niacin is supposed to raise blood sugar somewhat but it has had the opposite effect. He fasting was 150 range and after 3 months on the Inositol it has been 129 and now , one time has dropped to 107. Her average over the last three months is 115 and the Cholesterol and triglycerides are still dropping. And she has hardly any bad effects of the heart and arteries and muscles due to the C0 Q-10

Big Al,
I'm glad to hear your wife has had success using inositol hexanicotinate. Which brand is she using?

nunotes,
There is only one safe alternative? And that one alternative is buried somewhere inside the PDR? Which alternative might that be?

Does 100mg of the standard CoQ10 = 30mg of the "maxi-sorb" variety? I'm taking the latter, and while the recommended dosage is 1 x 30mg/day I'm wondering if I should be taking more (I'm also taking 1200mg RYR/day).

Thanks for all of the informative responses! I was thinking about taking just the 30 mg. per day - I'd like to hear more from BIG AL with regards to his wife's diabetes and going off the glucophage (metaforin) - what exactly has she done with diet, exercise and what is she taking (mg. per day).
Thanks ! Deb

CoQ10 does nothing, there are absolutely know substantial studies that show general health improvements from taking this don't waste your money people. don't let these vitamin companies screw you, you watch in about a year it will be selling for the same amount as vitamin c.
