View Full Version : Asthma and beer

before I got asthma I was not much of a drinker, but, I did enjoy the occasional night out and having some beers.

Now, I feel really paranoid to drink because of my meds and also because I am asthmatic.

I do feel like crap after drinking even if I only drink a beer or two, and generally get pretty ripped ona beer or two now.

I used to be able to drink at least five.

I cannot tell if it is anxiety that causes my symptoms to flare when I drink or if it is the actual beer....

Or if its the meds.

Anyone have any opinion on this?

I have had something similar with drinking red wine. I spoke to a someone who works for a wine company and he mentioned it may be the sulphites. Does beer even have sulphites? Seems like red wine has more than white or blushes.

Besides the sulfites, beer has a lot of yeast in it. If you have an allergy to yeast - and apparently that's fairly common - beer will be off your list.

That really stinks, because I like beer, and do not like wine or hard liquor.

Oh well, good thing I am not much a drinker.

Thanks for your responses. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

I thought it was because there's yeast in the beer.

I have the same problem...don't know why, but it's totally turned me off the suds. That may not be a bad thing though. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I have been on Advair since it came out, and I drink regularly. I drink either white wine or Zima. I don't know if Zima qualifies as a beer, though. I haven't had any problems from my asthma associated with alcohol.

Hello, i'm 24 & i have the same symptoms as you blue..... i feel like i'm never going to get any relief from my asthma.... i constantly feel like i'm not getting enough air.... but i find (unlike you) when i drink around 12 beers my asthma doesnt bother me, maybe i'm just to intoxicated to notice but the next morning my asthma seems to be worse. oh yeah, i've been on an albuterol inhaler for3 or 4 years and recently i'm taking singular, non of which have ever made me symptom free..... but i know how you feel, i havent had a good nights sleep in a along time..unless i'm intoxcited.

I know exactly how you feel Michael.

The thing is with me, if I drank 12 beers I would probably throw up. I cannot even handle that much anymore. One to three is it for me, but I also take effexor, so that may explain my intolerance, too.

It is scary, that intoxication is the only way to find relief, that could lead to a bad addiction problem.

Micheal, people have told me that I should get more tests because feeling this crappy all of the time is NOT normal, and, it may be that my meds need to be upgraded or changed.

It sounds like it may be the same for you.

Apparently, having constant smptoms is not the way it should be, and the docs can do something to make it so that we have symptom free days.

Maybe you should get re-checked too.

Lets keep one another informed.

I go for PFTs on monday.

Hi Everybody
I haven't tasted red wine in many years as it brings on a severe asthma attack. I was told it was likely due to the tannin. I also discovered that some white wines make me very wheezy (mainly French & German) I've got no problem with most other white wine though. Apparently they put a lot of sodium metabisulphite in white wine as a preservative, also beer & this sodium metabisulphite is bad news for asthmatics. It's also used for sterilising bottles. On packets in the UK it's on the label as E223 & manufacturers put it in everything - they even spray it over those nice healthy-looking takeaway salads we think are good for us!
