View Full Version : I've got a cold:(
I'm in my 38 week and I've come down with a pretty bad cold. Apart from feeling totally frustrated, now I have to deal with a bad cough and stuffy nose. My doc. told me not to take anything for the cold just to gargle with salt water....but today my throat was really irritating me so I sucked on a Strepsil...actually I've taken 2 so far....then a friend told me that I shouldn't have had them, that they are bad for pregnant women. Have I done the baby any harm???????? Please help cause this is my first pregnancy and I'm really worried now.
I feel so bad for you. I went through a similar cold months ago. I didn't want to take anything either, so I mixed sugar, lemon juice and hot water in a cup (homemade lemonade) and sat and sipped on it. For some reason, the lemon made my throat feel much better and the steam helped to clear my head. I also bought a humidifier for my bedroom and it helped ALOT. I was told by my dr that nasal saline drops were OK in moderation. They are basically just a saltwater solution that maybe you could ask your dr about.
I hope you feel better soon..((HUGS))

I was told that strepisol was fine. Especially when you are as far along as you are. Not too much can harm the baby now that it is practically ready to face the world. I hope you are feeling better. Jane

I can relate to you completely. I am now 22 weeks and in that time I have gone through two bad colds and the flu. I am currently suffering from cold number two. Last week it was the stomach flu. I feel like I am sick more now that I have ever been. Go figure!! You would think with the healthy foods and prenatal vitamins that we would be doing great. I use a humidifier, rub mentholatom (sp??) on my chest, and drink lots of hot grapefruit/orange juice and honey. I have also been told that you can such on ricoli cough drops. This is the only part of pregnancy I really don't like. I used to get a cold just down a bunch of cold medicine and sleep. Now I suffer. I can't breath, my throat is sore, my ears are stuffed up and watering if you can beleive that. It sucks. Anyone else have any other safe remedies we can use?

Here's a list I found of safe OTC drugs that we can take while pregnant...
Indigestion, gas, upset stomach: Antacids for acid indigestion or heartburn (Tums, Rolaids, Mylanta, Maalox), Simethicone for gas pains (Gas-X, Mylicon, Phazyme)
Cough or cold: Guaifenesin plus dextromethorphan (Robitussin DM, Benylin Expectorant, Vicks Cough Syrup), Cough drops, Vick's VapoRub
Note that some cold remedies contain alcohol so you may want to use them sparingly if at all. You may also want to avoid products that contain the decongestant pseudoephedrine which can affect blood flow to the placenta.
Pain relief, headache, or fever: Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Anacin-3)
Allergy relief: Chlorpheniramine antihistamine alone (Chlor-Trimeton allergy tablets)
Be careful not to use decongestant sprays more often than is recommended on the packaging, as they can damage nasal passages if used too frequently.
Constipation, diarrhea, and hemorrhoids: Bulking products can be used regularly (Metamucil, Citrucel), Laxatives and stool softeners (Colace, Dulcolax, milk of magnesia), Hemorrhoid creams (Tucks, Preparation H, or Anusol), Antidiarrhea medicine can be used occasionally (Kaopectate, Donnagel)
Insomnia: Diphenhydramine (Benadryl, Nytol, Sominex-2), Doxylamine succinate (Unisom Nighttime Sleep-Aid)
First-aid preparations: Polysporin, Cortaid, Lanacort

I am 26 weeks pregnant and this is my second pregnancy but will be my first child. I have recently gotten a horrible cold, complete with the stuffy nose, cough with chest pains and sore throat. Since I have already lost a child I was really nervous about what I could take, I was not taking anything but then it got reall bad but my doctor had given me a list of everything that was safe during pregnancy which will be listed below for all of you. I go to a specialist so I am sure he would not put something on a list that would hurt the baby. They did tell me not to use Vicks Vapor rub becuase there is Alcohol in it and it is absorb in your skin and may or may not cause problems. Robitussin DM is on my list and the bottle says it is 100% alcohol free. They also told me that throat drops are safe and to gargle with salt water. I hope this has helped everyone Below is the list they gave me.
Milk of magnesia
Flagyl (After first 12 weeks)
Metrogel (After first 12 weeks)
Milk of Magnesia
RID (do not use Kewll)
Monistat 7 Cream
Terazol 7 Cream
* This is the list they gave me at my doc. but to make you feel better you should still contact your doc.*
