At my last visit to the endocrinologist she told me to take Prilosec because of my symptoms of nausea and gas. Yesterday during my visit with my GP I asked her about it. I told her I was not having classic symptoms of heartburn or refluxing back in the throat, but she agreed with the endo on the symptoms of nausea and gas. My insurance won't pay for the Prilosec because it is now over the counter so my GP gave me Nexium. Any of you taken the "purple pill"? Does it have side effects that bothered you? Did it help? Thanks for your imput. :)

I was diagnosed with acid reflux and was prescribed Nexium and it did really great. But after reading post's from different woman on the board, I am sure it is one of the symptoms of perimenopause. Read Charli's thread she has some sound experience, and advice that worked after reading the book by Ann Louise Gittleman, she appeared on the Dr. Phil show you can check it out by viewing his web site. I feel after trying some of the things the book suggest's I won't have the problem with the acid reflex will let you know how it works. Dana

I have not tried the Nexium samples my dr gave me. I just don't feel I have the classic symptoms of acid reflux. But I have more than my share of gas! :o I believe that may be from taking the natural progesterone from the compounding pharmacy.Glad your natural progesterone is making you feel better!! I hope your ride was enjoyable!

You know I wouldn't have even thought of that as the problem. I'd been trying to figure out why all of a sudden I was having problems with gas. I never have before in my life. I'll have to ask my doc about that when I go in this week. I'd been having several other symptoms which led me to believe things were starting to change, including a period that just does not seem to want to stop. Maybe the gas is just another one of those extra bonuses.

Since all of these "things" started happening last August 2003, I have had increasing problems with gas. Two weeks ago I had such bad pain on the right side of my left breast right where the heart lies, that I went to my GP and had an EKG done just to make sure everything was ok with my heart. I thought it was gas, but I wanted to make sure since the pain lasted about 5 hours. I have been taking extra strength GasEX four a day for about a month. I have had pains in the top of my ribs too. This has been a real problem for me. I would be interested to know what your doc says. Please post after your appointment.
Thanks :)

Doc said it could quite possibly be caused by menopause. As a matter of fact gas was listed as one of the symptoms on their perimenapause chart. Just another fun thing to deal with.

Hi,
I was interested in this thread as I too have had more indigestion at this time (I am 49) and also gas pain type of symtpoms too and it seems to be more about 2 weeks before my period especially. Like last week it was worse than this week (my period is due on the 11th) .

I have been to the doctors and gyn. They both said that peimenopause can be part of this and I am certainly finding that. It also sometimes, as far as the gas discomfort , seems to be in one area more than others and that always concerns me but since I also have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (which the doctor said will be worse at this stage of life) it does relate to that too. The anxiety I have over every little twinge does not help and the doctor did prescribe Xanax for anxiety which seems to help but I do not take it often.

Someone mentioned Gas-X, does it help for the type of gas pain that is below the navel or is it more for indigestion? I have found Pepcid helpful for the regular type of indigestion symptoms.

Hope you all are doing well,

rmc

RMC,
I have been taking 4 Extra Strength GasEx a day for about six weeks. It does help with gas in the lower intestines. I just have SO much gas that I have to do something. I also use the Pepcid AC everyday. I believe you would be helped by trying the GasEx. According to my pharmacist and doctor the active ingredient in GasEx is mild and suitable for long term use.
Hope you have better days ahead! :)

Thanks so much Penny for your input. I do find also at this perimenopause stage these issues have been more prevalent and did talk to my doctor who confirmed that too. The Pepcid was suggested and I know some people also who take the GasEx with success to for lower instestinal gas. Seems to crop up more for me right before my period.

I am finding exercise helps also greatly as it seems to move things along : )

Thanks again,

Hi Penny,
Nice to see you posting! Guess you have been busy. How have you been feeling? Was concerned when I didn't see you posting lately. When I've complained about back pain, my doc said to exercise too. I have been exericisng and it doesn't seem to help, but I'm still doing it everyday. Once you start, you'll get into the groove of it!

Take care,

Hi Molly!
I have been mostly reading instead of posting. I have been busy with work and I was feeling really good, or so I thought, and Easter being my favorite holiday I decided to do some Easter baskets and have a party on Good Friday. Well, even though my mother is here until the end of the month and she helped alot, I could not have done it without her, that was too much of an undertaking!!! I did really good up to a point then I got tired really easy. I realized last week about Wednesday that it was the week before I start my period if I start on the same cycle. Last month was a 26 day cycle.
I enjoyed it, it was just too much. We made 14 Easter Baskets!! :D I made cupcakes and cookies, 2 dozen decorated cupcakes and 3 dozen cookies and made a hugh basket for my GP's office and I took a smaller basket to the bookstore where I buy all my books. Then we made baskets for my friends 3 children and everyone at the part recv'd a basket! I also went all out decorating for the party and cooked a full course meal. Soo....I am glad I did it I enjoyed it I have just paid for it this weekend. I had such a nightmare experience last month with my natural progesterone cream until this month when it came time to use it I just was not sure what dose to use. So I have not really used it consistently, so that acounts for some of my fatique right now I am sure. My progesterone level has probably dropped after my endo shot it through the roof!! I am suppose to decided on a dosage that works and let them know remember! Enough about me. How are you? Still feeling better? I know all your exercising has to pay off! I did ask my GP about how long I would be on the Paxil CR and she said we would talk when I had been on it 6 months. I have been on it 2 months tommorrow. What have you decided about how long you will take it? I hope you had a nice Easter and have a great week!! Post Soon! :)

Hi gang! I've been having the gas problem too and I have to say it has everything to do with the perimenopause blues. I hate it and my doctor gave me nexium also. I haven't taken it yet, hoping to kick it myself. But sometimes the pain radiates up into my chest, like burning sensation and I think I'm having a heart attack. I took the echo cardio stress test and passed it. Boy, these symptoms are unbelievable. Is anyone having any hot flush surging up from the stomach or navel? I had one yesterday in my back, came up from the bottom of my back all the way up and then I spotted some blood. Unbelievable!

BTW, magnesium 250 mg. a day does help with surges and stomach pain.

Hi Penny,

I was actually diagnosed with that first and I don't have the classic throat symptoms - all in the stomach/chest. I take 40 mg. nexium once a day - in the morning. I had the prylosec but I had to take it twice a day and it's just as expensive. If your doctor can keep giving you the nexium that is great. With my insurance, it's a $40 copay! I mentioned it to my doctor today and he gave me a bunch of $20 off coupons towards my next refills.

Funny, it's like which came first, the chicken or the egg? I went in and they dx'd me with the reflux a few months ago and now I'm in for hormonal testing. Wonder if it was the hormones all along? My mothers swears it is and I'm only 39. My mom started at 38.

Anyway, the only side effects I get from the Nexium is minor burping but it feels so much better once I burp! Just drink lots and lots of water when you take it.

Hope you feel better soon,
KC

Thanks for the reply. I have not yet taken any of the Nexium samples. I take Pepcid AC and I am just trying to put up with it. It is really not that bad. My worse problem is gas!! So I take the GasEx for that and it helps. Maybe I should try the Nexium, I think like you said it is all a part of this peri thing! Hope you feel better soon! :)

I'll take anything so long as I don't get "medicine head" - specially while I'm at work!

My motherinlaw has acid reflux and she was on the Nexium for a month and now she only has to take the Pepcid - don't they have a new type Pepcid that's out now? I thought I saw it in the store

KCI think you are referring to the 20mg Pepcid AC. It was just 10 mg OTC and now it is 20mg.

Hi Penny,

Pepcid has a new one out - it's Pepcid Complete - I saw it when I was at the drug store at lunch hour.

It's on their website:

Pepcid Complete has been out for awhile. I have taken it alot before all these peri problems. It is really intended for an after the fact problem like a spicy meal. It has an antiacid component in it. I like it maybe it will work better for you than the traditional Pepcid AC. Hope you are feeling better.

Well last week went to gastro and he was great. He said it was amazing how our tissues, receptors etc. play in the perimenopause. He did ask me a question, he asked, "how do you know your are perimenopause besides some of the symptoms and age you are? In other words, besides hot flash, what other symptoms bother you?" I said, "How about that morning wake up and you feel just raged or depressed and you want to jump out of your skin!" He said, "Yep, that's perimenopause!" LOL He started me on asiphex, one a day, 20 mg. for two weeks. I've taken it a week now and the gas is subsiding along with the burning sensation. My esophagus is less sensitive too. Hope it stays like that. Keeping my fingers crossed, it does. My stomach just really or really can hurt with the hot flush surge. As the heat rises, so does my stomach. I had so much heat right below my rib cage in the middle up to my chest that it seemed as though I was burning fire in there. I believe I was. My skin still feels hot. I'll see if I have to do the endoscope. The funny thing about perimenopause is that, you can't just accept it's perimenopause or menopause, no there has to be something else wrong with you until you've been checked out from head to toe. LOL Kind of like being a hypochondriac all of sudden. Funny, I only went to the doc for a pap and mammogram or cold in the past. Now look at me, it's hop, skip and jump.
