ive been worried lately i had unprotected sex at the age of 16 in mid january of 2003 a yr later im worried about it. i dont rember having the symptoms of 2-3 wk period. i donated blood 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 months after wards to the red cross and it came back clear. i was just tested for diabetes about 3 wks ago and everything came back fine. i noticed white spots in my mouth but the doctor said it was nothing to worry about. white spots are one of the symptoms of the virus but isnt it caused by thrush? ive been worried to death about it n dont wanna go get tested. id like some opinions

hey there,
well since you are worried about HIV there isnt any symptoms you would probably notice only a year later. I believe thrush is caused by the yeast candida albicans and it pretty much never shows up in healthy individuals. I do belive it causes white spots in the mouth but i think it is normally on the tongue and your doc probably would have noticed if it was thrush when he looked at it.
When they screen blood for HIV i am not sure how they do it?? It may be that they look for HIV antibodies. Immune molecules your body makes specific for the HIV antigen. If they do then at 2-3 months these may not have shown up. But i am sure the way they test the blood is sophisticated that at any stage of infection they would see it in the blood and discard it. So this is probably a good sign that you are not infected.
When you think about this, one tends to think the worst. Chances are that if you had unprotected sex with HIV+ male who was infected you would get the virus. BUt chances are this male wasnt infected so then you would be fine.
I would suspect that you are HIV negative but the only way to know for sure is to get tested. It is up to you whether you want to do this. It is weird because you want to know for sure but at the same time if you are positive you dont want to know so you avoid going to get tested.
My advice to you is if you are really worrying to go and get tested. THis way you can put it all behind you. And the slim slim slim chance that you are infected you can avoid spreading the disease to other males and at the same time get some of the excellent treatment available.
Having said all this i would think you have nothing to worry about but it is up to you to decided your actions. YOu can also talk to the male that you had sex with if you know him and ask him about it if you are compfortable. Good luck.

i would like to say something about your situation. they DO test all donated blood for HIV. if they find it they send you a card or telephone you that a problem was found in the screening process and to get further testing. although it is NOT a fool proof plan to test for HIV. as far as the chances for becomming infected from a one time exposure from an already + person is 1/500-1/8000. those are pretty good odds that you WON'T/DIDN'T catch it. i hope the other poster didn't scare you by saying the chances would be good if your past partner was + that you would get it. that just isn't true. as far as the white bumps, lots of people get mouth ulcerations for whatever reason. thrush happens in HIV + people when the disease has develooped into AIDS basically and the immune system is all messed up. otherwise healthy people can get thrush too from anti-biotics or an altered ph balance from stress or even sleep deprovation. there is no reason that i see in your case that you should not be tested. it would really ease your mind. HIV is actually very hard to get. easier for women, but still vey difficult. because you have donated blood and you got no phone call that is an optomistic sign, but don't rely on it. also. i don't know how long it has been from your last exposure, but if it has been a while, HIV symptoms show up in 5 years if left untreated and you would KNOW it by now. hope that helps.

Hi there,
Wow, i didnt know that even if an exposure with an HIV infected person that the odds are like that to contract it. I thought pretty much if that person is positive and you have unprotected sex, you are most likely going to get it. Im sorry if i scared you which i dont think i did, but i am glad that this person pointed that out. YOu learn something new every day!
