Hi everyone--

I have had chronic bronchitis since age three when they told my Mom that I would outgrow it. Not factual..I am 34 now and just diagnosed with chronic asthma. I was put on Flovent, Serevent and Singulair for the control and neubulizer when needed. Has anyone else faced this same path? Is someone else on this regime of meds and how are they working? I would appreciate any input that you may have...Thanks Sheli

Sheli, I also have chronic Bronchitis and asthma. I am on all the usual med's and I hate it. I get pheumonia at least twice a year and it is really wearing me out. If I get a cold then it goes straight to Bronchitis and pheumonia. I hate taking the steriods, mainly because it puffs me up and I think makes me mean. I have finally managed to stop smoking this year so I know my situation will improve greatly. I can't take sinuglar, it gives me an awful headache and rash. Fall and winter seems to be the worst time of year for me. How about you? Do you find that asthma just wears you out and takes your energy away? Anyway my grandson was just born and he was born with asthma!!!!!! now he has bronchilies (sp) different from bronchitis. Hope he grows out of it, sure makes him sick. he is only 3 months old and has been sick all three months. But things could be worse huh!!!!! so I guess we are lucky asthma is all we have. Good luck to you http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

hi!

I just found this site..... I hope someone can help identify or even relate their experience, I would really wannar know why I am havin this cough. This was after I was admitted to hospital coz i couldn't breath properly. I am not sure what I am having, My doctor (specialists) has not identified the problem yet, still on try and error basis from what i can see.

but my symptoms now are a sticky feeling in my throat (like phlegm).
I keep coughin bcoz it tickles my throat whenever i breath. It does not come out and coughin does not help. Also, the critical point is whenever i breath, it tickles my throat and start coughin continously. By then, I am almost unable to breath, and i start vomitting.

So far, I have been diagnosed by doctor that I am havin mild asthma. THis has gone on for more than 3 years. I have tried this 2 inhalers initially, then moved on to SIngulair, and just recently Seretide 250mg and Singulair, & this inhaler on stand-by called "berodual" by Boehringer Ingelheim. I dun noe what it does and whether it is effective coz I am suppose to inhale it in the worst case possible. Even now I have this phlegm feeling in my throat as I type this.

To shelli and Workinggirl..... are ur symptoms the same as mine? I am 22 yrs old rite now.. this started 3 years ago... My medications haven't been totally working as of yet...... Singulair used to help 2 yrs ago....... but I am not so sure now........ my doctor has never mentioned the work chronic bronchitis b4... so i am not sure if thats causing it? I hope anyone can relate this http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

thanks.........

Hey Daniel--

It sounds alot like what I get. i have had chronic bronchitis that is more like an upper respiratory infection with runny nose and cold like symptoms. That would clear up and have this constant drainage dwon the back of my throat (the tickle) and always trying to clear it with no luck. I tries the antihistamines and benadryl with no luck and was just diagnosed with severe asthma. Do you smoke? If you do...best to quit right away as that will only worsen your condition. The singulair cmbined with the Flovent and Serevent twice a day have lessened my symptoms and been almost two weeks free with out an attack. The difference with bronchitis and asthma is the bronchitis lets you clear the mucous out of your lungs (couching/vomiting) but asthma means the lungs are reproducing that mucous as soon as you can get it out. Not a fun thing but good luck and let me know if I can help with anything. Thanks Sheli

Daniel, have you been tested for TB? sometimes Doctors get asthma and TB mixed up because of the coughing. I also have what they call the "asthma cough" it is very bothersome and can really wear you out. Keep taking your med's and hopefully the cough will play out. good luck

Thank you sheli and workinggall for sharing your experiences with me......

I am presently having another strange cough which i am not used to..... dunno why, but it only started after i got out of hospital.... I have this phlegm (again) stuck in my throat... but this time... it does not go off (neither does it tickles)..... wheneveer i am awake, standing, sitting it just get stucks there..... so far, the only way i can avoid feeling it is to lie down, that usually helps me breaeth better without feeling that "gut" in my throat..... and go to sleep..... i guess i am not used to this...... is there a way or medication to get it out? Have any of u felt this sensation b4?
I am thinking of goin to an ENT.....

it kind off scares me in fact.... really..... I feel more tired these past few days......

I am not a smoker.. never smoked b4.... and i have checked out for TB..... all negative...

once again, thank you for ur kind replies...

thanks

Have you been checked for GERD? sometimes GERD and asthma play together. GERD (acid reflux)can cause a real nasty coughing spell and it in turn can produce asthma symptoms. It wouldn't hurt to check it out, also you don't need to have heart burn to have acid reflux, I know cuz I was diagnosed last year with it and never have heart burn, chest pains sent me in to see the Doc and he ran all the tests, it came out GERD after endoscopy.

Hi Folks,
I also have chronic bronchitis and Asmtha. I've done some research on aspects of Asmtha.
I asked a doctor long ago why I always had such lung problems. His frist question was:
Was I premature baby, which was yes very much. like 2 months. The lungs are the last to develop and you will always have lung problems. (depressed me to find this out).
Also, If your female you will have more sever attacks at specific times of the month. I think you get my drift.

I hate the cough from asmtha. I also get the feeling of having a hard time breathing.

What I'm wondering is there a herbal medication that help with the asmtha. Does anyone know??

I have chronic asthma and chronic bronchitis and sinusitis. It is the pits. Flovent, singulair seem to make it worse. I am at my wits end this summer. On my second dose of antibiotics. Can't breath. Afraid to go outside.

I use and expectorant and that helps.

I agree about the GERD. Heartburn can set off an asthma attack.

Hi Folks, I had chronic bronchitis for 20+ years. I have a question re: the difference between the 2 as far as how you actually feel. I know I'm sicker than heck when the bronchitis strikes, but, during 'healthy' times, I experiences shortness of breath sometimes, and almost always have a very 'chesty', non-productive cough. Alot of the throat clearing kind of cough, too, which, to me sounds SO gross to be doing all the time. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif
When I AM able to cough something up, it feels chunky and is dark. Sorry for the graphics.

I smoked for alot of years, but never heavily. I do still enjoy a good smoke for special occasions, but 'quit' the actual habit almost a year ago. I know each time I do smoke, I have to go through days of coughing and clearing, generaly feeling like sh**, too, so you'd THINK I'd get a clue! Having an albuterol inhaler available has really helped.

I'm thinking maybe it is asthma, but this is the first time I've explored anything about it. Your posts help. I think I'm a tad chicken to go find out if it is that, or worse.
You're further input would be MOST appreciated.
thanks,

Hey Copper, I'm surprised to see you here.

To the young man who developed sudden breathing problems, is it possible you may have been exposed to chemicals that affected your breathing. This is what happened to me, and your symptoms sound the same.

I also have symptoms which match Fibromyalgia and some symptoms similar to Parkinson's and others similar to Lupus.

I was one of the fortunate ones to have a multiple chemical exposure in a small, unventilated space. Were you by any chance in a car accident involving airbags? I never had breathing problems, never had bronchitis, or anything like this before in my life until I breathed that awful stuff. Did you know one of the major airbag manufacturers has a mixture which, when the airbag deploys, exposes you to about 16 different gasses and chemicals all at the same time? Most of them are respiratory irritants too.

Well, here are some things which have helped me. Azmacort (this one is really good) and Serevent. Most powder steroid inhalers don't help me because I just cough the powder right back up and it all ends up in my mouth and throat. My airways are too sensitive to handle them.

Also, I know that milk is supposed to exaccerbate asthma, but, if you have chemical inhalation injuries, according to the Merck Manual, warm milk is supposed to help rebuild tissue.

Drinking warm milk was really a turning point in my coughing condition improving. I guess it really did help to rebuild some tissue, or at least coat my airways enough to keep airborne particles from making direct contact with my airways. Unfortunately, when I stopped drinking warm milk, the coughing came back. Summer humidity isn't helping my breathing problems either.

Another tip one of my docs gave me is, to use Cepacol Antiseptic mouth wash, mix half mouth wash, half warm water, and gargle with it about three times a day. This helps to cut the phleghm in your throat. He is right, it really does help, and especially if you catch a cold, it gets rid of the sore throat right away.

Hope this will be of help.
Take Care now.
Sincerely,
Caring

any answer or help would be greatly appreciated.
