it had no effect on me but it often helps for stress and anxiety, its a different type of antidepressant to prozac and can be tried if prozac doesnt work

cocohoney,
I've been on effexor about 3 months. I started out on 75mg day, after a month it wasn't working so my doc raised the dose to 150mg. It is effexor xr(time released). I feel some difference. I notice that I speak my mind, which is something I never really did before. As for the anxiety, I still feel anxious, but some of the depression is gone. I didn't really have any side effects with it, but sometimes I have trouble sleeping, not every nite.
I think I need to have my dose raised. I need help mostly with serious anxiety.
Don't let anything I've said stop you from trying something that will help you, medicine works differently for everyone. :)

It made my heart race all the time & made me very hyper, I am hyper anyway, so I need a med that kind of calms me, like I told my pdoc, I'd rather be dopey from the med than hyper with my heart racing.

I have been on Effexor XR 75 mg since last October and it is great for me!!! At first I had bad side effects such as increased anxiety, decreased appetite, muscle twitches, very very sleepy during the day. Eventually these all went away. My anxiety, panic, and disturbing thoughts are a ton better! I still have days where my anxiety is higher than the average person, but it is VERY managable and doesn't happen that often. I haven't had 1 panic since I have been taking it. I am sooo glad I stuck it out during the first 2 months. It has been great for me!

Hi, I was on Effexor for alomost a year. It only made me have dry mouth and a little dizzyness in the begining. But your symtoms will go away after 3-4 weeks. It helps!
Good luck!

I have been on effexor for about 2 months. And it has helped with stress and anxiety. Which was the reason I was put on this medication. I take 75mg xr once a day. I dont worry about every little thing like I use to. Far as side effects, occasional upset stomach and that has been it. Hope it helps you as it has me.

Glad to hear everyone so positive on this. I seem to be more concentrating at work, not off task, my mind is not off wondering. My panic attacks have been very slight, compared to what they were in the past. It's been the best speed I've ever had LOL. I mean I can actually leave work and have energy to go home and do chores at home, look forward to my spouse walking in the door without biting her head off. I am not so edgy and things seem to roll off my back. Its a miracle drug, eh? I hope the doc keeps me on it for another 6 mos. She only agreed for 2 mos. because I was a tummy tuck patient with complications after the surgery. Being bedridden and becoming depressed and when they started talking reconstructive surgery I freaked and my anxiety levels went way up. Now, I feel totally like myself in my 30's...going with the flow.

Also worked well for me - at 225mg per day. Only problem was excessive sweating (chest and back, not armpits oddly enough!) which proved inconvenient at times!
Just be careful not to miss a dose - you'll probably start getting withdrawal symptoms before the second day is through (quickly remedied by taking the forgotten dose immediately).
Also, when it's time to come off the drug - do it slooooooooowly!

I've been on 75 mg xr for the past two weeks as well and have crazy problems with sweating and hot flashes too. And my doc wants to up my dose instead of decreasing it. Also I notice that it makes me drowsy. Haven't seen any positive effects though, but I'm patient :)

Hi, I've been on Effexor XR for almost two years to help with chronic pain. I don't have many side effects, but the ones I do have are night sweats sometimes, dry mouth (I just drink lots of water), and the worst one is lack of libido.

I was on Effexor for 8 or 9 months. I remember it erasing full-blown panic attacks and seeming to help me for several months, but I crashed at a point when I was still on the med. Got depressed and crazy and had to go to the ER. I'm not sure I really have anxiety and not something else. I wrote a post about it just now.
Anyway, I remember 2 side effects which were glaring:
1) I lost a tremendous amount of weight. I'm talking 40lbs in 2 months. Just drastic. I was overweight at the time, so my doctor wasn't alarmed. But for someone else, it could be bad, I think.
2) I would have what I've heard other people refer to as "brain shivers". Where I'd feel a sort of vibration in my head. I thought it was kind of scary. It would only last a minute or less, but was way weird.
Other than that, there really were no side effects. And if I thought the med was really helping me, I think I would've stayed on despite those 2 negatives.

I just got off effexor because it didn't work for me. It made a flat uncreative person. No Highs, No Lows. Just this sheer flat line _____________________ that was my life.

[I] Everyone is different, but in my experience Effexor wrecked my life. I withdrew from it last November after suffering with severe confusion, seizures, cognitive deficits, muscle spasms, tremor - to name just a few. My fiance was the one who made the connection between what was happening to me & the Effexor - my doctor was adament that I simply needed the dosage increasing. Since withdrawing it has come to light that I have an intolerability to drugs which affect my serotonin levels - I've been on various ones - trycyclics, SSRI's & SNRI's. However, Effexor has been by far the worst one. I am still suffering with the effects of it now. It's well worth having a look at www.********************.com. As I said, everyone is different - in my case they didn't work, but many others report that they do work. It's worth doing the research before you emark on any changes in medication, and always ensure you have a professional opinion.

Missmokay with your weight loss did your appetite decrease? Mine seems to have increased but everyone is remarking I am appearing thinner...I am eating though. April 9th I'll be on it one month. I haven't had weight loss as of yet.
