I have had asthma for many years, but never needed any medication to control it until this summer. I have been on Advair for a few months and it seemed to be helping. But for the last couple weeks I get this feeling like my throat is closing. It seems to happen most often when I lay down. Has anyone ever had this, or does anyone have any idea what this could be? I don't get the usual tightness in my chest, just in my throat. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have had the same problem, and it turned out to be acid reflux disease. I never have had heartburn, am 23 and am in very good shape. Acid reflux though can cause these symptoms, and in my case, seemed to have worsened my asthma. Since being put on prevacid, I am doing much better, just something you might want to look into

I've never had that problem, but there is a disorder that mimics asthma that has these problems. It is called Vocal Cord Dysfunction. People with it have told me that they feel like their throat is closing. You can have VCD and asthma, or either or. May be worth looking into.
you can do a search to learn more about vocal cord dysfunction.

I have this problem. But only at night when I lay down. My throat feels very closed and I cough up thick white mucus. (very thick) My chest does get tight, and I weeze only when I breathe in. Breathing out dosen't seem to be much of a problem unless I am havng a severe attack. Lately I seem to have many attacks. But only at night. Does asthma attacks generally happen at night?

Sometimes my asthma is worse at night - it could be the bedroom you are sleeping in. I have a lot of allergies and one of them is dust mites. Make sure your bedroom is as dust free as you can make it, no rugs, not flower arrangements, if you have curtains, wash them frequently. Wash your sheets with hot water at least once per week. There is a new spray that is supposed to control dust mites, I haven't tried it yet so I don't know if it works.
If you have pets, make sure they are not allowed in your bedroom. I did get an air purifier for my bedroom and it works, the only down side is the filters are very expensive, a word of caution - don't put it close to your bed, it actually draws the dust and irritants to it and you are worse (at least it happened to me).
Don't know if any of this will be of any use to you, but keeping my bedroom really clean and dust free helps me alot.
