I am 40 yrs old and just had results of blood test. Thyroid fine, and hormones all in acceptable range - including progesterone. Am I still ovulating even though my period is 3 weeks late? Can't get hold of GP only had to talk to his very stupid nurse who wouldn't tell me anything else. If everything is normal, why aren't I having period? Another one would be due next week, what happens if I don't get that one either? Can anyone tell me what is going on and why aare my hormones testing normal when obviously they aren't?

I Can anyone tell me what is going on and why are my hormones testing normal when obviously they aren't? Because your hormone levels fluctuate greatly during perimenopause. Here's what nationally reknowned nutritionist, Ann Louise Gittleman has to say on this issue: Most doctors test only the levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). These hormone levels are elevated during menopause but rise and fall steeply during perimenopause. Thus, if you happen to be tested on a high-level day, the lab test result will suggest that you are menopausal [and if you are tested on a low-level day, the lab test will suggest your hormones are "normal"]. To get an accurate and usable hormone profile, you also need to be tested for levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. But, keep in mind that the levels of these three hormones fluctuate, too, so that a test on one day may yield very different results from another a week later.
The good news is that a less expensive, more convenient method is readily available: the saliva test. Your doctor may offer a saliva hormone test or you can take it on your own, in the privacy of your own home. The results from saliva tests tend to be more accurate than those from blood tests, particularly for progesterone.
About 95 percent of hormones are bound to proteins, forming particles too large to pass into saliva. Only 3 to 5 percent of a hormone is in a free, biologically active form-and this is what is measured in the saliva test. Fifteen years of research back the validity of saliva hormone tests, yet they are still new to clinical practice. Ask your physician to order the saliva test for you or you may order a saliva test without a physician's reference.
Hope this helps. ;)

I began to skip them also....but mine started later.....alot later !! But I have alot of friends that began at around 40 to 43. They went thru it fast tho or had moderate side effects. I felt good when I began missing them......sort of missed every other one for a short while then would skip several and have one light one. Did ok for a while but then the wratch of hormones hit hard after I got off Paxil I'd taken for 2 years which I did not realize "mite" of been keeping things goin along or in a controll'd state. When I stopped takeing it things changed and I went thru the lousey severe fatuge stage...lost alot of weight fast and it hit me like a rock !!! I didn't like that stage at all.....the weight loss was ok but it was too fast and seem'd I was so weak and had no appitite which can't be good. Hot flashes hit later....probly a year or so later....it's been a weird ride !!! Pam
