Hi Jenn062,
Dry eyes were the first symptom I experienced this past August. My eyes suddenly became blood shot red, felt burning/tired like, kind of sensitive to light, and I can tell it affected my vision some. At first, I thought it were allergies.
While my eyes were like this, I also started to feel the worse I have ever felt in my entire life. At first, I thought it were my eyes that were causing it, but apparently I was experiencing these other horrible peri-meno symptoms at the same time (dizziness, headaches, extreme fatigue, internal shakes. etc.)
I recommend you go see an Ophthalmologist as soon as you can. You don't want it to get worse because it can cause permanent vision damage. In the meantime, don't wear contacts if you normally do. Also, make sure you use OTC drops (in individual vials) that are preservative-free only. My dr. eventually put on me a new prescription drop called Restasis which I am still using. It has improved my eyes tremendously. I am still being treated for dry eyes even tho my tear productions are now at Level 9/10 (Level 10 is considered pretty normal for my age). I am in their study program for this new drop so I'm still using it for now.
Hope this helps...keep me posted on how it goes with you.

Jenn,
Sorry to bother you on this thread, but I would like to know if Dr. Gilbard helped you at all. I live nearby and would make an appointment if it would help my dry eye situation.

Hi,
Thanks Molly for your reply, are you taking any hormone therapy at all? I hear taking hormones can worsen the dry eyes, are you in the topical androgen study? I heard that study was going on, and that it really was suppose to help with dry eye, hopefully they come up with something that works.
Thanks again,
Have a great day :) Jenn

Hi,
I seen Dr. Gilbard about a month ago, he really just gave me a routine eye exam, and he told me to take thera tears nutrition capsule and use thera tears drops 4x a day, he said I should be feeling better in 2 months, but my eyes still feel the same :nono:
He is a really nice guy, so I don,t want to discourage you from making an appointment with him, but he really did'nt do any more than my local eye doc. but then again most of the eye doctors know little about the cause or how to treat dry eyes.
well I sorry I couldn't give you better news.
Have a good day :) Jenn

Hi Jenn,
No, I'm not taking HRT. Don't want to because of all the risks I've read about. Are you on it - is that what you think is the cause? I'm not in the topical androgen study. The prescription drop I'm using is Restasis which has been out for couple of yrs. only, is not a steriod, which I understand isn't really that good for you in the long run. There's a group of us who are using this med and they are seeing how each of us are responding to it. My eyes are practically back to normal. Don't think everyone had positive results like me. There is another new drop out there now too - don't remember the name of it tho.
If you feel Dr. Gillard didn't really help you, go somewhere else. You might need more than just OTC drops. My dr. said those capsules don't really help. Don't know where you are located but check out big medical centers. My dr. specializes in dry eyes. He did all these tests on me - put little strips of paper on your lower lid to see how much tears I was producing, poked my eyes with this needle thing to see if my eye nerves are working, put this liquid stuff in my eyes and then viewed to see how inflamed the corneas are (dots would show up on your eyeballs that they can view), and used these tiny tubes to see how much tears I produce in so-many seconds.
Dry eyes can be cused from being a long-term contact wearer, taking antihistamines, allergies, aging, hormonal fluctuations. Basically, your corneas are still probably inflamed that's why they haven't changed. Are you able to cry? Also, do you have dry mouth? They tested me to see if I had Sjorgren's too.

Hi Molly,
I have been tested for Sjorgens, it was negative, I thought I had that because of the dry eyes and joint pain.
I recently had the saliva test done to test my hormones, I have not recieve the results yet.
I am pretty sur that hormones are the culprit, I have joint and body aches, insomnia, depression and my periods arrive sometimes as early as 21 days, I was a 28 day gal, and they don't last as long.
This all started 2 years ago when I was 39, so the drs thought I was too young for it to be a hormonal issue, but I am pretty sure it is.
Do you know how accurate the saliva test are?
I been living a nightmare for the past 2 years  , You ask if I am able to cry, I cry alot more than I use to.
No I am not taking any hrt either, I am afraid it might make things worst.
Thanks for all your help!

Hi Jenn,
I was tested for Sjorgens because of dry eyes and the extreme fatigue (24/7). I tested positive for Sjorgens but the Rheumy dr. confirmed that I didn't have Sjorgens, but just dry eyes. I didn't have the dry mouth or the arthritis or lupus. The blood work showed neg in my sed rate (whatever that is) and for RA (rheumy arthritis). However, my endo dr. disagreed with the Rheumy dr. who swears that I had Sjorgens. Well, my eyes are pretty back to normal now so I guess the Endo is wrong.
I read/heard that the saliva test is the most reliable. Because your hormones fluctuate, the blood tests aren't always accurate. I haven't had the saliva test done. What kind of dr. do you go to for this? I had the FSH test done and I was within range which I guess means I'm just peri-meno, not meno.
Are you going to pursue your dry eyes or just deal with the way they are for now? When you cry, are tears flowing? Some people have dry eyes so bad that they can't cry.
I can understand how it feels to have insomnia - had it for years. Now I just accept it because eventually it does catch up with me. I also get achy but more so in the morning. It is horrible to feel bad all the time and I know how you're feeling. All I know is that once I've experienced feeling so sick (extreme fatigue, dizziness, loss of appetite, internal shakes, burning arms/feet, hot flashes, etc.), nothing else matters anymore but my health. I'm just glad I don't have anything life threatening!!

Hi Molly,
I am still going to the eye doctor for the dry eyes, but they tell me there is not much they can do, I have my tear ducts plugged to help keep the tears in my eyes, so when I cry the tears do run out, but my eyes sting badly when I cry, oh well I guess it is something I am going to learn to live with, as far as my other peri symptoms I am hoping some supplements might help.
Have you found any supplements that help?
Thanks again Jenn

Hi Jenn,
Having plugs put in my eyes would've been another alternative if the prescription drops didn't work. I am so glad I didn't have to take that route. I wouldn't accept the drs. saying there's not much they can do for you. I recommend you ask your eye doctor about Restasis and see if it might work for you. It is quite expensive if you don't have insurance. I am taking lots of supplements and vitamins right now but I wouldn't know if they are helping my eyes or not. Do you know how serious your dry eyes are? Mine started out as "moderate."
I find sitting at the computer tires my eyes out too. I take breaks and look away (at a distance) every 1/2 hour. Are you using anything at bedtime? I use Refresh P.M. - I probably don't need it now but it has been such a habit now for me to use it.
Take care,
Molly

Hi Molly,
My eyes when this first started was diagnosed as severe, so severe I had a doctor call me bubble girl, I guess he thought I should live in a bubble  .
They were dry, sometimes they would stick togather.
The punctal plugs helped keeping the tears in my eyes, but they are still very irritated.
I can't go anywhere without my sunglasses, I even wear them in the grocery store, because my eyes water so much when they are irritated, it is not a good look :nono:
I have been using Restasis since it came out last April, but they say it dosent work as well for people with punctal plugs, I still don't know why this is.
I have all 4 tear ducts plugged, and if I did'nt my eyes would be dessert dry.
Well I'm sorry for sounded so discouraged, but my life has not been fun since this started, my whole life has changed, I was a outdoors person my husband and I would go camping and fishing all the time, now I cant stand being out in the sun. Oh well hopefully they come out with something that will work :)
Thanks for listening to me vent my problems
Have a great day! Jen

Hi Jen,
I didn't realize you have been using Restasis already  and that your eyes are that severe. I am really sorry that it has been so bad for you. I do understand how uncomfortable having dry eyes can get, especially if you are also experiencing other peri-meno ailments - all this can be so debilitating and makes you totally miserable. I know there is another new drop out there that I think just came out this past October. I don't remember the name of it, but I did read out it on the Internet when I was searching for info on dry eyes syndrome. Don't worry about venting...this is what the board is for!
